People's politics are mostly determined by where they live, and maybe their age. If you insist on fighting over politics, you should at least recognize that's what you're fighting over. It's not about life and death or o

I hope he tries, because all the facile anti-tech rhetoric on the left will probably go away if he does.

It's a shame that btrfs seems to be dead in the water. I guess nobody with the resources to build such a filesystem actually needs its snapshotting and integrity features at the filesystem level?

The bit about local restaurants losing business seems like a pretty thin fig leaf over a law that's really about taking tech employees down a peg. I don't live in the bay area, so maybe someone can fill me in. How is it supposedly

This is a nice counterexample to the wisdom that production compilers all use hand-written parsers. Of course, the current parser does suck, but...

What are the free speech laws that prevent ISPs from blocking controversial content?

I think what we'll really see in practice is this being used for political purposes, with pressure groups getting ISPs to block so-called "hate" or "extremist" sites. The stuff about service tiers seems less likely

I recently was looking at the original LR paper by Knuth, and for the first time noticed that it said "Case Institute of Technology" at the top. i.e. he discovered it as an undergrad.

The math majors in my upper-level math classes had significantly better social skills than the people in the CS classes I took. This is only an anecdote, but it's not obvious to me that mathematics isn't more social than CS.

Nobody will talk about "common sense media control" for some reason. It's common sense!

It's like how the 2008 election didn't count, because Obama is actually a Kenyan. People can't just lose an election anymore.

Here is, roughly, the media's playbook: 1. Never stop talking about Trump. Mention his name 300 times an hour on CNN. He's not a serious candidate, but he is entertaining so they give him free publicity until he is a serious can

Analysis in general is notorious for these kinds of things. There's a neat little Dover book called Counterexamples in Analysis full of them.

My father recently passed, and a month or so afterwards we got a bill from the nursing home pharmacy who, apparently, couldn't figure out how to bill his insurance. The price for 30 atorvastatin, whose out-of-pocket cost is about $20,

I do believe that MACRO in the slides refers to MACRO-11, a PDP assembler. Or maybe MACRO-32, for VAX. In either case, they have been compiling this "assembly" language for Alpha (and now I guess Itanium) since VMS has run on that

I guess Apple could 'survive' releasing a new generation of laptops which run slower than the previous ones to facilitate a user-invisible component sourcing decision, but it seems like a bad move.
