If you need to define and write the functions to calculate interest… what exactly is the llm bringing to the table here? I feel like I’m missing something.

I'm pretty sure the combined power of HN can figure out how to put an Ubuntu installer on a thumb drive and reboot.

I recently re-installed and instead of installing rustup I thought I'd give the Arch rust package a shot. Supposedly it's not the "correct" way to do it but so far it's working great, none of my projects require nig

I'm sorry but "Steam broke Gnome" makes no sense. This is like the person who says they installed Firefox and it broke the internet.

I feel like there is a wide gap between "hand holding" and holding the specs locked up in Cupertino never to see the light of day. A M-generation Mac is not the same kind of set up to allow running software as say, any x86 machine

There was an Ubuntu engineer recently talking about using the rust coreutils which are bsd licensed instead the old gpl ones. But he made it clear it was more about “rust is better” than anything to do with the license.

The hardware might be open for now but you can imagine Apple would like to keep the possibility of closing it off on the table, thus the allergy to gplv3. Edit: "without any problems" is definitely a stretch.

Probably because they are working towards a future where they don’t have to worry about releasing source code for anything, while being free to make any modifications they want. They just need time to code around all the FOSS they’ve leech

Because presumably the GPL would force them to release their modifications. Apple gets/got away with leeching off the BSDs because of the permissive license.

I don't think so. Here's a report from this month: https://freebsdfoundation.org/blog/february-2025-laptop-supp... Looks like (some) laptops might sleep and wifi is on the way! (with help from Linux drivers)

Is there a compelling reason to use Swift over Rust for anything other than Apple development in 2025?
