I think you misunderstand the problem we are solving here. We are not trying to solve this because our system can't handle it. We are protecting it from when Firebase decides to slowdown in a way that causes data to backup and OOM the

These are n1-standard8 on GCE. These are getting easily over 30,000 requests a second each about updating queues for new messages. And also are subscribed to presence events from our presence system to millions of people. It is a very busy

2 reasons. - To avoid OOMing the Erlang VM. - If the notification queue is backed up then older notifications are not worth delivering if we can speed up delivering of more recent ones.

These machines do more than just push. They also buffer messages for each individual user to "potentially" push if they don't read them on the desktop client. This happens before the flow this article talks about. We currentl

We ran the exact same code (minus the Chat view) that we have on iOS which performs really well. It performed poorly on Android devices we care about. Touch events would lag (because of the JS computations hey resulted in), animations would

We haven't tried in months so I can't give a scientific answer but our assessment early on was more that due to the diversity of Android devices. The low end ones that are for sale even now won't perform well enough for our u

I have no actual work experience prior to my current job and no degree. I am 23 years old and I have a 6 figure salary and equity in the Bay Area. If you know people that know what you are capable of and can refer you to a company then an a

Depends if you are actually good at something. Great engineers easily find work anywhere. I am drop out. It took me only 1 week of looking to get a 6 figure job in the Bay Area with equity. It is also my first real job. It is nice knowing t

With eventlet and gevent you can write asynchronous that looks synchronous. Which is the point of greentornado. That being said we still use synchronous calls to our databases.

I love Tornado personally, but I wanted to write synchronous code. Eventlet (the project that Gevent forked from) allows you to write hubs while gevent only supports the libevent hub. So I made http://github.com/vishnevskiy/greentornado t

I have been coding 14-16 hours a day for the past year for my startup. The only down time I have is to hang out with my girl friend to keep her happy. Originally it was my day job and the start-up and about 18 hours a day, but ended up quit

What you call "the market" I would disagree with. Just because every other guild host out there offers bulky flashy layouts does not mean that is what the market wants now. Any user of those sites you talk to now will tell you they are not

Facebook is out of the question because a lot of MMO players do not want to mix their real life with their virtual life. All the profiles and feed updates on the site are automatic through our crawlers. The DKP is manual and for many games

In my perspective I was leaning more toward having funding for a designer (I assume they paid 10k for http://luxr.posterous.com/ or got it free). I am not a designer, but since we have not hired one, I am the one doing the designing and e

My point was not to say that Tornado is faster, but that his test is far off from proper results. His tested showed that Tornado was 2x slower the Node.jsbecause he did it wrong, I actually find Node.js rather impressive =)

How many node JS instances are you running on this machine? I am guessing 4? 1 per core and each one is aimed to handle 50k idle connections? And if you are running more then one, how are you load balancing them? Nginx? Also I would like to
