I would argue that really depends on the subject. Maps are to some extent limited. Yes, they are never 100% up-to-date, but looking at my small village if I had mapped that 10 years ago all I would have had to change up until today would be

MapQuest Open is probably the style you are looking for. You can even select that as a layer on openstreetmap.org http://tools.geofabrik.de/mc/#14/52.5147/13.3899&num=4&mt0=m...

http://regio-osm.de/listofstreets/index.html uses streetname lists from local governments to see if anything is missing, spelled wrong etc. There are usually always a few errors.

But a lot of apps are just used in a certain area. For example transportation apps. And when it comes to websites there are even more of those. Not to mention that more and more apps use data that only OSM provides.

In the end is simply all comes down to limited resources. Should I edit the wiki or contribute to the map. Should I develop something that makes it easier contribute the data or fix errors or should I make a nice application for average use

You can compare the maps here, but that of course ignores a huge amount of "hidden" data: http://mc.bbbike.org/mc/?lon=13.38885&lat=52.51703&zoom=11&n... Then there was a small analysis in Germany

It's not that bad then either. If you have 3 gallons per 100 miles, then 3 fits into 14 a bit less than 5 times so you will get like 470 miles. I mean it's not going to be exact anyway depending on the conditions.

Consider contributing yourself. If everybody would just add his house with his address and make sure the street is there and maybe some houses around you that would already help a lot.

I don't think it is missing that many business listings, after all foursquare is for example using OSM. What it lacks is a service that extracts the data, makes it searchable and has ratings etc.

What are you missing? I always just used the one in the browser and that did most things just fine. Just recently used JOSM which of course has some advantages, but the basics seems to work everywhere.

I think the reason Google maps works so great now is why a lot of people support OpenStreetMap. They simply don't want a private company to have some kind of almost monopoly on good online maps, which then can dictate the rules how it
