We could actually run a generic clock synchronization protocol to synchronize clocks over a partially synchronous network. I guess paxos kind of builds that in, which adds to its complexity. Safety in particular doesn't require any tim

I don't think it hides any complexity, but I guess that's for the reader to decide. Raft on the other hand... I've implemented versions of both paxos and raft, and by golly was the latter more difficult to get right.

Paxos shouldn't be the first protocol you learn -- I think it gives consensus this mistaken reputation for being "difficult to understand". Consensus protocols (and the related problems of state machine replication, permissio

Funding top research institutions are in fact long shot bets. Where else does research get done? Who pays for the buildings, where each one costs hundreds of millions of dollars? Scholarships? Who pays for new tenured positions? Yes, admini

Depends on your definition of impact. Tesla certainly is not improving education outcomes worldwide, nor funding healthcare research; nor is spaceX saving rainforests from being cut down every day, or helping sustain democracy. I guess EVs

Misinformation really does spread like wildfire. Even with the number of naysayers on Hacker News we still seemed to have had a lapse in critical thinking. I've been wanting to get into research on the study of the spread of tweets lik

Uber rolled their own crypto? Do they still? I thought you could always import some C library on iOS or Android (or use bouncycastle, unless that wasn't around then)

Seriously though, doesn't it strike any of you as absolutely hypocritical? We're attacking data collection in public spaces in real life, while defending it in our own domain (virtual life). I know that a lot of tech industry payc

I'm confused why hacker news thinks collecting demographic data is a bad thing, and is all about regulating it... when everyone's personal website has google analytics installed and is doing the exact same thing. Yet we don't

For those interested, there's a whole literature on "verifiable secret sharing", and they generally require some substantial cryptographic heavy lifting and provide computational guarantees https://en.wikipedia.org

I remain skeptical that admissions committees can distinguish between great students and good students through their personal statements. (Not that the SAT would have helped there either)

Design is rooted in reality in the sense that it must be functional. My argument is that this particular design is wholly un-functional, and that the diamonds that HN is optimizing for - fancy animations, pretty concentric circles - don

Exactly, and my point it that this particular clock belongs in the 90%, not the 10%.

From a design point of view, reading this clock is strictly harder than reading: "2020 March 16th, Monday 10:50:48" and also provides no useful extra information, unlike a traditional clock face.

I think this is one of those instances where the UX makes it better. It forced me to slow down, parse each line one at a time, read line-by-line, image-by-image, and let the gravity sink in. I would have just skimmed it if it were a text ar

The whole point of technology is to make processes more efficient. This in turn drives down prices and increases productivity. If it takes fewer people and factories to make a more sustainable vehicle, so be it. This is also the force that

Disagree. Theory is always interested in building better, simpler protocols, asking questions about lower bounds and possibility. See almost all of fundamental crypto research.
