I feel like this should be linking to the associated blog post that actually explains what we're looking at. https://medium.com/airbnb-engineering/ts-migrate-a-tool-for-...

> Untyped languages allow for rapid development Citation needed. In my experience this is a fallacy; types take no time at all to write and significantly reduces bugs (Typescript).

Heh, reading this is reminiscent of the shortcomings of Typescript when external data is mistyped. Ps I love Typescript.

No, because the best way to motivate an engineer is to tell them something is impossible.

The penalty for screwing it up is 20m euros or 4% turnover - why is it not surprising that devs play it safe? This is entirely the laws fault for driving this behaviour.

We got one of these in the office (much smaller) that we only bring out for conventions. It's a nice conversation piece but serves no practical purpose.

Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker. Maybe not mindbending, but a must read for us engineers prone to burning the midnight oil.

I think this is an attempt to keep the code clean without multiple assignments to 'supported'. I don't think there's any real benefit. Unless something else took a reference to it the GC will get it after the main script

I was the developer responsible for the bluetooth integration of a "smart lock" in an android app and it was an absolute nightmare. I don't know if manufacturers have got their shit together in more recent smartphone generati

I'd say the strong version of the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis applies, but the subject is the computer, not the human.

Iirc Denuvo's gimmick is that it's integration is tangled with the gameplay code (maybe encrypting some of it) so it's not simply a matter of patching out an if check.

I get the point the article is making, but as others have pointed out you could extend this logic to the entire stack of your software/hardware and conclude you're not safe unless you audit every bit. At some point you're goi

Agreed, but just wanted to add the context that you get undefined values by trying to access uninitialised things such as out of bounds array elements, get on a map-like object with a key that's yet to be set, unset properties on a obj

4 chains is like reaching into an XHR response to pull out the success result, so I wouldn't say that's necessarily a smell.

This looks like it'd be a massive pain to debug unexpected exceptions in the middle of a chain. Would you have to decompose the entire thing and step in and out of every step? Yuck.

It is using a Component; it's subtle but in the example "Drawing" is a Function Component that is declared using an arrow function. Hooks don't replace Components, but are a way to have state in what were previously know
