This is reminding me of when all the Vine power creators banded together and tried to make demands or they would "stop creating" and all it resulted in was Twitter deleting them and their entire website. Don't be surprised if

I'm seeing a lot of similarities between Reddit benefiting greatly from their unpaid moderators and Apollo benefiting from them the same. As well as not even having to pay Reddit at all. Did Apollo ever even have to pay for anything

The "fediverse" is a already absolutely overrun by bots and spam. Mastadon sites in particular. Nobody is running one of these things for longer than a few months until they just get tired of dealing with it.

The reality is that the Reddit users that actually care about this enough to show up and rage in the AMA are also the ones that are almost completely unmonetizable. So I doubt there was ever really any risk of major loss from this.

it's because the Reddit users that are actually bothered by this are unmonetizable and everyone knows it. nobody is eager to jump into that sink hole and Reddit itself is happy to be free of it.

Hard-delete isn't required by GDPR. The data itself just has to be made non-identifiable. You don't actually have to remove the database records, for instance.

This is what an HOA is for. If you don't have one then you should make one. If you don't want to make one then you can move somewhere else.

Reddit had already been rewritten in Python long before Digg's collapse. Several years. There may have still been ancillary services in Lisp, but nothing production-critical.

There's pretty much no scenario where Reddit wants to encourage 3rd party app developers to run their own intermediate "proxy" service for Reddit's API. For one it adds another barrier between Reddit and their own users
