So is the company doing a morally good thing when it provides the ability for someone to have food, housing, healthcare, etc? If not, it doesn't make sense to blame the company for eliminating jobs if they also don't get credit fo

This makes me miss the days when computers were ~12 watts and (basically) passively cooled. This would not be possible on any newer system. I'm also not counting the 1" fan on the back of the wii which was replaced by a heatsink.

I don't really understand the moral issue with a company eliminating jobs. Similarly, I also don't think these companies are doing a moral good for creating jobs in the first place.

It this really an issue? It's selling chairs to a legitimate government agency. People's politics have become so skewed. That's just completely normal behavior.

I'd rather just wageslave than sell snake oil to these same companies.

I tried to kill it with ublock and it's immune. I get distracted by pointless animations pretty easily but there's no way I can seriously read about the inner workings of cache lines while a cat is spazzing out on my screen. I alr

The issue is the misleading presentation of it. The writer of the linked blogpost is either dishonest or already missing what you're saying. >Next time someone tries to justify drinking alcohol, remember it causes cancer and other d

It's pretty funny that they just came up with a ranking system of their own criteria and we're expected to take it seriously as if it were a real study. They also rank cocaine and weed about the same at 27 and 20 danger points res

I know this is a horrible article written to sell services, but I skimmed through it and wanted to check their claim on alcohol being 3x more dangerous than cocaine. I tried to follow the "study released" hyperlink which just lead

It's very easy to suggest that to someone else when you don't have to take the risk or do the work.

It's pretty simple. I don't agree with any tech company, but I would still like to make enough money to live. I hope that clears it up.

A dog is a dog. They're more likely to draw aggro from a bear and bring it to you than warn you of the presence of another threat. This is one of the reasons that when hiking you're advised to keep your dog on a leash. My state go

It solves the issue of finding out a function signature changed at compile time instead of runtime, which is infinitely better. The real answer is that serious software developers don't just leave their packages on auto-update and rare

I was surprised to see kickstarter at 21k USD to produce new NES cartridges. That system is older than most people living in the US.

That's interesting. I have the opposite experience with teachers where they wanted to do a real job in their field but were stuck babysitting children as a backup plan. What's the opposite of passion?

At some point it was determined that working longer hours was safer than increasing the amount of mistakes caused by handoffs where new staff takes over and can make errors, miscommunicate, or just lose information. I'm still skeptical

What would be a better word for what I'm describing, then? India still has a caste system even with their government driven programs of mobility and hiring quotas, and more people moving upwards through marriage. It's not literall

Caste is absolutely about social hierarchy. At least half the definitions I've looked at mention both those words.

I don't get it. You can't represent 1/3 in base 2 either, and even worse, now you can't represent 1/10.

I consider pay more like a caste system in the US. It's a way to separate people who "deserve" to be highly paid and people who don't. Working in software, it always felt odd that I make 3x as much as the guy making my f

It's always funny to me when I'm new to an area and they offer me 14 precise turns and landmarks to get to the park 2 miles away. I'm just going to plug "the park" into my maps and know precisely where it is.

How does anything think setting up a system where you can get billed for clicking a link is a good idea? Along with no sensible monthly limit on the credit card. The whole setup is beyond ridiculous, and it's hard to believe this is ho

Every time this comes up someone in the comments pops up to smugly remind us that the EULA says we, as consumers, don't have rights. Why are you like this? Everyone knows we don't have rights. That's why we're complainin

I've seen javascript in PDFs be used for unintended exploits more often than every legitimate use combined. It's kind of like if JPEGs could run arbitrary code by design.

It is strange. Games have well defined pricing tiers that players and developers have worked out over time. $3 is generally considered somewhere between "trash you buy as a joke" and "a very short game without much in it"
