Hard to say! Switzerland and Belgium are both minority francophone countries, so it's hard to use the argument of numbers to justify a French spelling. Maybe because French was a diplomatic language. Maybe because of the Normand invasi

Don't the English write Bâle instead of Basel sometimes? (An officially germaophone city.) It can be that English retains the French writing. Nothing wring with that.

No doubt that Russia wishes to expand its influence in Africa. Why wouldn't it? The article contains a lot of supposition. Now some considerations to keep a cool head. - There is no evidence that Wagner or other PMCs are present in eit

Many transactions with western companies were for a small symbolic amount with a provision to leave the door open should it be mutually acceptable to return in the future. Not sure if that is the case here, the article is light.

Euros?? Where are you? It's a Welsh university. I wouldn't be surprised if the university wants to both promote the Welsh language and diffuse its research, and proposes such resources.

Really? Just write it in your native language (Welsh in this case) and have someone translate it. For most languages, not a big problem and the uni surely has the resources to do it. Here, the additional effort is the creation of the Welsh

My anecdotal experience is the exact opposite! I'm from some unpopular Canadian province and live in Switzerland. Lots of random controls in CH. I watch a lot of French television where they at least pretend to do the same in France,

Maybe a reference to Hervé Falciani? I find the comment pertinent, no offence to you Frontalier. You can thank guys like Falciani if lots of bank jobs in Switzerland also require residence in Switzerland now.

Nabiullina at the CBR has always been hard for me to read. (From memory: before the SMO, her policies seemed too conservative and restricted credit for SMEs.) So why did the CBR raise the guiding rate so drastically? Theories abound: a knee

That's how I understand it. But that won't stop people from submitting the same subject ('rouble tanks') 10 times to Hacker News as if to prove their opinion of this conflict.

I experienced very little illness, winter or otherwise, during the coronacrisis. I had two fevers that lasted on average 4 days. I had a case of mild bronchitis that lasted 3 or 4 weeks. On average, I tend to have more cold/flu/ri

What is an enemy of the west and what is a friend of the west? Take a random western country like France. Do you know how many Franco-Russian 'cercles d'amitié' there are? Go search in Yandex... or Google. Many quite old with

You're not alone. Today, every decision that I make is done with the objective of insulating myself non-violently from future coercive actions by the state similar to those during the coronacrisis. For example: expenses, domicile, care

Yeah so? The problem is that there are two subjects here. 1. Censorship in Russia. (I argue that there is some. I didn't discuss the USA where I agree, there is some also.) 2. The Russian Internet and why it has less to do with censors

A lot of the sensitive suburbs (amusing French euphemism) as well as university domains built after 1968 are designed so that entrance and egress can be hindered during riots. A car might not help, depending on where you are.

Good comment. Another weakness of Western commentary: people write novels about what they'd _like_ to see happen in Russia, then submit them as the new baseline. (So much effort really, for nothing.) And if we've learnt anything,
