I think the main crux of the article is ultimately dependent on the one thing he mentions at the very end: It goes (almost) without saying that the only reason I can afford to be non-technical is because I’m surrounded by a bunch of

RentHop (YC S09) has most of these features, especially the one allowing you to draw the region on a map. The caveat is that they only serve the New York City market. http://www.renthop.com/

For a more detailed explanation (and if you don't want to figure out where in the video he talks about it), Pinker wrote an article too: http://www.scribd.com/doc/389762/Steven-Pinker-What-the-Fuck... (I believe this is just an excerpt fr

BTW, you guys keep talking about MWI, while the original article is categorically not about MWI. The author describes a Tegmark Level I Multiverse[1], the most conservative of the multiverse models. MWI is Level III, and the author himsel

The author responds to this point in one of the comments; I quote: this is -- and I make no pretensions otherwise -- theoretical physics. It's not airy-fairy pie-in-the-sky speculation, but it also isn't proven the way you would prove that

True enough, though I doubt it's going to be through HN that the Chinese government finds out about it. It's already been noticed on some Chinese-language blogs: http://chinese.winandmac.com/hotgossip/apple-store-china-mai... (this one's

The event is referred to as the "6-4 incident" in Chinese (六四事件), so the month-day order is correct. Generally the year is listed first in full dates (e.g., 1989年6月4日), but it's arguably still recognizable when it occurs afterwards. [edit]

While strictly true, this statement ignores all the other taxes that people pay. Rather than rehashing the entire conversation, I'll simply point you towards the thread where this was previously addressed: http://news.ycombinator.com/item

The link that he gave already adjusts the numbers for payroll taxes (but it's obvious from looking at how the tax is collected that it's regressive -- i.e., flat rate up to $106k and then no tax on wages above that). With regard to state ta

It's interesting that all of these links talk about federal income taxes , but you talk about them as if they're talking about all taxes that people pay. Once you take into account payroll, sales, and sundry other taxes that people pay (m

MinWin is not so much a product as it is a continual effort starting with Vista to untangle dependencies and move unnecessary cruft out. It's still the NT kernel, only progressively cleaner with each additional release of Windows.

I believe this is an article you were looking for (written by Joel Spolsky): http://www.joelonsoftware.com/articles/fog0000000020.html The gist is that even though most people only use 20% of the features, everyone's 20% is a different se

I only disputed that 颱 was related to the meanings of "stand" or "platform". As for the meanings of "great" or "big", the OED and etymonline entries actually refer to a different character, 大, from the Cantonese pronunciation of 大風 (IPA: ta

The original traditional Chinese character is 颱; the Japanese adopted the character 台 as a simplification of the original character (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinjitai ). Therefore, the "stand" or "platform" meanings of the 台 char
