On the flip side, the market prices for most of these tracked data are not very high. It's only lucrative to sell this data if you have a very large user base. For paid apps with smaller user bases, the incremental revenue is likely ne

Why not a bet on http://longbets.org/ Plenty of people are bullish on VC and Silicon Valley, and almost by definition have plenty of money to bet against you.

Wow, I don't have anything useful to add, but I have to compliment the author. Every single one of these is spot on, and almost perfectly mirrors my experience. Great post.

Well, this post read my mind. Literally my first thought waking up this morning was "why don't I have some way to use my .vimrc over ssh?" I open up Hacker News and voila! Very nice - clean and simple.

What's the evidence for the link between west coast droughts in recent years and global warming? (I'm not trying to start a debate, just genuinely asking).

Wow, this is incredibly useful for planning touring routes. I often ride 100+ mile trips to areas I don't know very well and the hardest part is knowing what roads are more-or-less bikeable to plan a route. Google Maps bike directions

What's the perceived benefit of not allowing the spouse to work? Is this a "they took our jobs" situation, or is there something substantive behind that policy?

Just what I was looking for! I have a silicon phone mount now that I use and love, but the silicon straps cover part of the screen, which is annoying at best. I'm definitely buying this right away. Oh, they don't deliver to the US

That's one of my favorite things about the famous Earthrise photo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthrise The frame contains every living human, and every human who has ever lived - except for three of them.

Not a designer here, but this comment reminded me of the movie "Helvetica", which describes the same pendulum effect happening in font design over the years. Couldn't agree more that a swing the other way would be a great dev

I LOVE this idea, and it's totally fine if it becomes "a vast wasteland of garbage" as mentioned elsewhere in this thread. Technically, so is YouTube, but you probably don't look at all the garbage. You look at the good

I'm surprised to see the attitude of this thread as so optimistic about this potential future. Even ignoring the government / police state possibilities, I found this terribly dystopian, and I imagine many others outside of the most optimis

This is a false analogy. Kodak's revenue stream was not protected, but people were prohibited from stealing their film. The film business disappeared because of alternatives that the market preferred. The case of content is different. Free

I don't think it's a given that this model is inherently bad, obsolete, or evil. Unlike say, horses and buggies, it's not clear that there's a superior alternative here. In the case of video in particular, high quality content is still very
