Solid point. I'm really surprised this doesn't already happen. You could argue that this hasn't hurt on-demand services like iTunes and Amazon Video, where people could torrent the videos instead of buying/renting them.

Still waiting for the ability to purchase a new movie from home. Can't think of a single reason why it hasn't happened yet. Charge $50 if you want, people would pay it. And it would probably actually recreate that water-cooler con

Yeah, sorry, I didn't mean to imply it was a marketing site. But there was marketing surrounded it, and I distinctly remember it being used to show that they were, indeed, as fast as the other browsers. I remember a narrative being tha

Am I the only one that is confused by Firefox's "fast again" narrative? I remember that they launched the https://arewefastyet.com/ site a few years ago to fight the idea that FF was slow. It feels like there

What's surprising about this is that people find it surprising. I'm surprised that so few podcasts have figured out the formula is: pick a subject and talk about that subject. It's really not hard! So many people in the media

Can't upvote this enough. From what I've read it sounds like GraphQL solves a problem at Facebook where they have so many people working on related data at the same time that they started seeing duplicate API endpoints, and duplic

From a business perspective doesn't more characters = fewer tweets visible in the viewport = ads are less seen?

You know very well that community doesn't hear nuance, all they hear is that Fiber=fast and this is why people question the Preact developers with stuff like "will you implement Fiber". I know that FUD wasn't the goal, b

Someone on twitter suggested using the OS' own list of countries, working around the problem of the standard having to define what is/isn't a country. I think that's a reasonable solution.

Fair point, standards aren't immune to breaking changes, it's just a lot rarer, smaller in scope and with a much longer time frame to upgrade.

The "Fiber" stuff is FUD until we see some perf comparisons. It irks me that React gave their rewrite a codename and talked about perf, and so many people are now have this "Fiber is fast" stuff in their head without any

This is why I prefer web components. This is nothing against React. But it's a library, and they make breaking changes just like all libraries (eventually) do. The great thing about web components is that they cannot make breaking ch

I think Google is fully aware of what people mean when they say that AMP is given priority in search results. Insider terminology is an excuse to not confront the issue. This is why we can't have the discussion with Google; they are kn

It's hard to have a good-faith debate about AMP when Google says that AMP sites aren't given favor in search results, by defining the carousel as not being part of search results.

This differs from long polling in that http2 doesn't create a new connection. Also long-polling is request and then response, whereas http2 is (like websockets) full duplex.

Server push is not like long polling because the connection is shared. You could keep a stream open and push messages as needed. This already sort of is possible with fetch in the browser, but iirc there are some things the spec authors are

Again, this is unrelated to async/await. Normal functions might return a number or an object or undefined or whatever. Since JavaScript is a dynamic language it is unsafe to call a function without either 1) Trusting that the functio

I'm not aware of any programming language where it is safe to use a function's return value without knowing what the return value is. This seems unrelated to async/await, if you are calling functions that are returning things

No, the caller has control. result = await maybePromiseWhoCaresIUsedAwait(); You can use await without knowing if the function you called returns a promise or not. This works fine: result = await 3;
