I have a BeagleBoard like that in a drawer somewhere. Getting it to boot from USB may be a reason to fiddle with it again, sounds fun. As a side note, I want that reasonably priced < https://github.com/ataradov/usb-sn

I haven't heard it being called "Red Hat's XFS". Silicon Graphics, when it was still a company, ported XFS to Linux and Linus accepted it. I've been using XFS for a very long time, and I've never been on Red H

So, the 1973 one is likely really 9-track then, possibly 800 bpi. Should be fine reading that one on my drive, if the tape isn't in physically bad shape. Not that I expect them to ship it to me!

That was a bit tongue-in-cheek.. and a more accurate word would be "banned", not "illegal". It's just something HP used to sell, not dangerous as such, but it's a CFC-based tape head cleaner. Very efficient, an

I have a 9-track CCT tape reader/writer which I've used for tapes going back to 1982 or so. I'm kind of surprised that a 1973 tape is 9-track and not 7-track, but then again I'm not certain when the change to 9-track hap

Look at what I replied to. The claim was "You can't have [buses] roaming around with no way to turn them off remotely". As if there's some general rule or agreement that it MUST be possible to turn buses off remotely. W

"You can't have busses roaming around with no way to turn them off remotely." Hm? Not a single bus on the road in my city can be turned off remotely. There's never been one ever, since bus transport started. So why shou

The tests done on the buses showed that they can be stopped as well as otherwise controlled remotely from China. This is way more than diagnostics, and remote control is _not_ something which is common in road vehicles.

That's only about the black death, and some specific reasons for why that helped, kind of, _some_ parts of Europe. First, it definitely didn't help everyone - Norway, for example, lost all economic power and went into the 400 year

So the general theory is that if you kill half of the population the descendants will be better off? What's the mechanism, and what happens if you follow that to its conclusion?

My collection of 5 1/4" floppies were mostly fine, after some thirty years. I think I had one or two (of very many) with read errors. 3.5" floppies though.. just about every "HD" (1.44MB) ones were a goner. The &quo

Installing a Windows VM is not really an option for me for various reasons, but in any case that's just.. running Windows. I don't have a Windows license either so I expect I wouldn't be able to anyway.

Japanese Windows software mostly don't run, or does it badly, with Wine on Linux. Unfortunately. I've been a full-time Linux user since 1992 and this frustrates me. Some of the software won't even pass the install stage. I&#x
