I’d rather have safety default on with an opt-out, rather than the inverse that C gives you with -Werror -Wall -Weverything -Wyesireallymeanteverything. Compile it again one two different architectures, compile yet another time with clang-t

This is cool. What is sad is that it has to rely on a library of completion specs. It shows what kind of stone age foundations we are building on top of. The world would have been a much better place if CLIs themselves defined strict interf

For data not frequently egressed. Log storage for example, data locality will be better and you will only ever extract small % of logs stored. Same with data that is aggregated into smaller data set within AWS before you egress it.

One hour 4K Netflix episode would be around 1Gb magnitude and likely watched by even more than 1M ppl. Game downloads even bigger, often at several Gb, with similar amount of users. Though not everyone is Netflix.

There seems to be an underlying tone of waterfall=bad. That’s missing the nuance of why it’s often considered bad. Usually because you never know the requirements up front, leading you to build the wrong thing. Except, when doing a rewrite

If the GitHub action only takes the source repo itself as input, you can review the state of the repo, including the .github/workflows to ensure that the executable was created consistently from given commit. This assumes the actions a

This way of working should have been left behind in the previous century. Sandboxing should be default. Associating file endings should be a suggestion to the OS, accepted by the user, not something only configurable by delegating full supe

“docker run -ti -p 5412 postgres”? Easy enough to type on my phone. That downloads and starts everything you need and wipes the data on exit. Ideal for prototyping. If you want to keep the data, add some -v flag or use a compose file as sug

Not just cold starts. Similar struggles if your Infra-as-code deployments depend on your CI/CD pipelines, conveniently running in the same environment as the one having an outage that you need to push new configs to.

It’s still around and has hardly changed one pixel since 2012! Yet it still feels fresh and there is no competing product that can challenge them. Most other diff tools lack good merge capabilities and are subpar in multitude of other ways.

Using the output of find into another program is not safe due to risk of file names containing delimiters. You need to use find -exec. Good example of why machine readable output is important. Agree that the tutorial should showcase more an

Did anyone ever get asked to simply make the estimate lower? Without any other context? That never happened to me, it sounds extremely immature. Feedback that you don’t agree with the estimate on the other hand, happens all the time. This i

Humans survived with [0-9] as the main identifier for their phone line for 100 years. ASCII is actually a great improvement in that regards. Unicode just introduces too much ambiguity to be used in security critical context as in a hostname
