The idea that Google is trying secretly trying to push some agenda by putting embarrassing and ridiculous bugs into their code is mind-blowingly stupid. Google is a for-profit company whose interest is in making money.

Agree 100%. The idea that "This can't be a bug! They must have spent huge amounts of effort making deliberately ridiculous outputs that no one would value!" comes close to clinical paranoia.

The more boring but more probably true explanation is that almost no one captions their family photos "white woman with white man", and nearly all of the photos of couples that use the word "white" or "black" a

This is hardly new: stories similar to this have appeared every few years since Google started image search. The boring truth is that this is not a monetizable query, so Google doesn't really care: and that no one except a few white su

I came here to say this! I might add that this has showed up every few years on social media, always with this same, "Look at how the woke are destroying our search engines!", spin on it.

I finally ran into the "on" bug just last month with github workflows: the default .yml file github writes has an unquoted `on` as a key to a dictionary, and pyyaml "correctly" interprets that as `True`. I can imagine th

I'm technically aware, but do I really have the expertise and bandwidth to tell the difference between an actual CVE and one that isn't, for the whole database? The database isn't really much use unless it's pretty accur

We should be defending the creators of our most important tools, like `curl`, from gratuitous time-wasters like these! I'm glad the `curl` organization is a CMA now, though, maybe that will mitigate the issue.

The point of the article, which I hope you did in fact read, is that some sites force dark mode on the user, so "just use whatever setup you prefer" doesn't work. This is particularly hard now when many sites use images of pr

Like most older programmers, I have some astigmatism - not even that bad, apparently. (A majority of adults in Europe and Asia also have it.) One of the side-effects is that light on dark text is harder to read. And now a lot of people seem

But people definitely do judge. Try wearing a face mask these days - even if you're sick and wanting to protect others, some people will frown at you, or even ask you to take it off.
