After reading this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etisalat#Internet_Censorship I'm forced to conclude we all must be doing something right.

I think people saw this in 1995 and thought “what an idiot” and I think people are doing the same thing now. But in my opinion that’s a mistake. What we should be seeing is that his points were valid in 1995 and are still valid today (exce

Well again part of the point is to spec out your project very specifically. As in "These are the functions we need, these are the variables we will be passing and these are the results we expect to be returned". So code reuse isn't a prob

I guess the question for me is “what do you mean by successful?” After a lot of trial and error I’m to the point where the simple outsourcing I do is relatively successful by my own standards but that success is not based on saving a lot o

Ok well...first...you're using "straw man argument" wrong since I'm not trying to refute Apple's position (not trying to be snide but just to make you aware for future use) On your point you're certainly right but I'd argue this is where we

I'm not sure I'm understanding your point but let me clarify my own and see if that addresses it. What I'm saying is when people use the phone search they are trying to search the phone part of the device (SMS, email, etc...). That doesn'

As a developer I think you're obsessed with features. Whereas users don't necessarily want those features. Apple's bet is that users will reject the platform with more features in favor of the platform that works better. Let's take your exa

I flagged this article because to me the requirement for a HN submission should be that it makes the reader a smarter or better person. This does neither. Let me be clear that I don’t approve of what Goldman Sachs did. But there’s no mor

I agree on the article but not on the API. In my opinion the real reason your startup should have an API is because it's good design. The thing that always bugs me about the API debate is that an API is just another word for "Business Tier

My only issue with the video, which I think is great, is that he doesn't seem to look at what is actually causing the problem he's trying to solve. To my eyes the problem this video seems to want to solve is that of unpleasant work places.

I've always said I think the iPad is more a bet on the future than it is on the present. I wrote a post on my blog a while back that I think makes the point pretty well(if I might be so conceited): http://tomstechblog.com/post/What-People

You make a good point but as I thought on it for a while I came up with this question: Do kids want to be the same kind of adults as their parents? In other word, I can see your point that kids want to be more grown up. But kids do tend to

In my mind it's an issue of "Enabling Device" vs "Venue". Put it this way. Say your hang out as a kid was a bowling alley you used to drive to every weekend. As you grew up and had kids you took them to that same bowling alley for Family

Honestly I don’t think Facebook will be that hard to kill because at its root it is a social movement and all social movements die based on two basic facts. 1. Kids rebel against their parents and don’t want to use the same things their pa

At this point I think we can safely say Google is in a perpetual state of "about to launch a Facebook killer" and will continue to be so until they actually manage to kill Facebook. So without any details to back it up Kevin Rose's source

I don't know Mr. Thiel and have no inside information on his views. But having worked in a startup I think I can see where he's coming from. To understand his point I think you have to realize there are two types of workers in the Valley:

Kudos to the creators for keeping at it. But in the end I don't see if being of much consequence. If it ever does get out of Alpha and is viable than Microsoft will likely stop at nothing to bury it with lawsuits. They'd have to because i

My 2 cents on these 6 for what it's worth... Economy: Many successful startups have succeeded in a down economy (Microsoft and Google were started in recessions). The truth is a down economy is good for a startup because it weakens larger

I don’t see this as that big a deal. It’s bad but it’s the bad part of a good cycle. Essentially the traditional University system didn’t bother to adjust it’s curriculum to the real life needs of students. So a bunch of private companie

Google has never taken a hard line against Flash. In fact they've used it in a few Google products (Google Finance's charts are Flash for example). So I don't see why they wouldn't use Flash's superior media support for this.
