From the article: "Computer simulations done in advance of the landing attempt did not incorporate the terrain of the new landing site, Ujiie said." The problem wasn't in the software, it was in the planning and testing.

His Things I Won't Work With are always hilarious as well as educational. And they really make you wonder about the chemists who actually work with these substances, especially when their notes include things like "violent explosi

You truly know you've become an adult when at least one of the things you played with as a kid are now banned from sale. This is a perfect example.

I rode this with my parents just a few years after this accident. I don't recall any mention of it at the time. My mom was an anxious sort and I'm sure if they had said anything we wouldn't have taken it.

My learning history is similar to yours Basic->Pascal->C. I feel it was a lot easier learning C by already knowing Pascal than it would have been coming directly from Basic.

Something definitely happens to people when they become extremely rich. No one will say "no" to them for fear of reprisal. Most of us encounter limits on what we can do, not enough time/money/political power/etc., a

Some of these aren't just bad, they're downright evil. Don't be surprised if someone implements one of them not realizing they're supposed to be a joke.

I was an early adopter of Apollo and it's probably my most-used phone app. I'm hopeful this will go well, but what happened with Twitter is hard to ignore.

The Pilot Manhattan fountain pen in medium nib is the best fountain pen I've ever used. Combined with a Maruman Mnemosyne notebook (also from Jet Pens) it's perfect for journaling.

I was taught slide rule basics in 8th grade. The teacher had one of those giant slide rules that was mounted above the blackboards. Then in freshman year of high school I got my first calculator (a Bowmar "Brain"). Every now and t

“Tubes just distort things in a very pleasant way,” This is probably the best description of tube sound. Not that they don't distort, just that humans seem to like it when they do. If you A/B tube and solidstate amps at a level

It was a configuration issue between the machine being emulated and the ROM I was using. I found it by chance poking around in the config since there was no indication of what the problem was. Now I have to figure out everything else.

I use Mnemosyne notebooks ( https://www.jetpens.com/Maruman-Mnemosyne-Notebooks/ct/765 ) from JetPens. The paper works great with any pen or pencil and the spiral binding allows them to lay flat.

This is a message to all of the remaining developers there that it's time to move on. But you know there's plenty of "that won't happen to me, I'm different" going on.

Even an old 5 MHz scope will do for audio applications, though that generation is getting on in years and likely to be a problem to maintain.

I'm currently using Menlo in VS Code (on Mac) since SF Mono is too restrictive for my needs. I like Fira Code but the ligatures, while very nice, would be confusing for my students and probably best not used.
