Kodak did a lot of government work over the years. When the news came out, no one panicked. Kodak was the biggest employer in the region and had a lot of local goodwill, we trusted them to take care of things. Needless to say, that is no lo

A local apple farm and cider mill uses UV for pasteurization of their cider instead of heat. I use it to make hard cider, and it's as good as unpasteurized cider (no longer legal to sell in NY) was, and I don't have to use sulfite

Tubes are definitely inferior to transistors in a lot of ways, but nothing sounds like them (FETs come close). Plus, there's the comforting glow of those little glass bottles that just seems right.

On Firefox Mac, it doesn't scroll with the scroll wheel, though it does with the down arrow key. Go figure. Looks cool, but I'll stick with my DSLR scanning setup.

I think you've hit on something important with work and accomplishment. I've heard software developers say over and over again they don't feel like they've actually accomplished anything when they complete some coding ta

Cute, but I can't help but wonder if the resources used for this could have been better utilized elsewhere.

I fondly remember patching 68K code in memory on an industrial control system my company was developing. I was able to decode the instructions just by looking at the hex display. Daresay, I could not do that with any modern system.

It's bad enough that one Reddit moderator can wield so much power with such impunity, but /u/spez handing over all of Reddit's data for LLMs to use has now poisoned the chatbots that so many are using in place of search

I do a lot of photography, including "street" photography, but I don't shoot photos of people. I believe that you should be asked for your consent to be photographed, and I tend to avoid social interaction whenever possible.

I'm old enough to remember a time before blue LEDs. Funny how they're everywhere now. I make photo prints using the cyanotype process and a UV LED light source. It's a combination of old and new technologies with a very uniqu

I've been keeping a journal since the '90s, handwritten in cursive. Other than my signature, it's the only cursive writing I do. Everything else I use block capitals. Writing by hand helps you remember things in a way that ty

It was Rochester's largest employer for so long. Now it's become a bit of local trivia, much like Xerox. Both of them struggled to deal with changing markets.

Ah, E85. My wife's flex-fuel Chevy could use it, but it ran poorly and mileage noticeably dropped. It wasn't worth the meager savings (it's usually more expensive now) over regular gas. I've always wondered about the env

I found a Stevia product, White Stevia, in my local organic market. It has maltodextrin added, but that's it. The downside is it's not measure-for-measure with sugar (1/6 tsp vs 1 tsp sugar). https://www.nunaturals

I remember using that compiler for M68K in the mid-80s, cross-compiling on a DEC Vax. The debug monitor we were using only displayed hex, no disassembly. The compiler was so predictable that I could locate the memory location for any C stat
