I disagree. If French lessons are important to him, why should he give them up? It sounds like one of the few things he does for himself (outside of work) and it may provide a good outlet for him to page out his work and focus on something

Well said. The thing that bothered me the most when I forced myself to use it was that it seemed like a high-school language hack tried to rewrite perl and got some of his buddies to help. Each of these guys hacked in their own versions of

I second the Steelcase Think recommendation. I was having severe nerve problems using a basic chair (after a recent move) and tried a few iterations before I was able to get the Think. My problems instantly went away. Moreover, I can easily

You should check out contract manufacturing. Many of these types of small jobs can be handled by a CM in China. The problem with any physical device is cost--cost in materials, machining, tool building, assembly, etc. This means you'll prob

I thought I would post a practical application, FWIW. I recently applied edit distance to a problem I was facing on my free dating site. Being free, we attract an inordinate number of scammers. I've been developing an arsenal of tools to he

I appreciate the idea behind Joel's article--that developers need to have everything available to do their jobs and not be bothered by corporate minutia. The best software companies are organized this way. What I have always found dissatisf

Nice design. I've recently built a more general dating site and I see in your site many of the issues that I've been dealing with. The chicken and egg problem is the biggest. Until you reach "critical mass", whatever that is (1k, 10k, 100k)

This may work for marathon coding sessions (be sure you're following TDD practices), but it can be counterproductive for people dealing with GAD. It can actually be a cause of GAD.

Only if you want it to thrive. There are a number of interesting backwater languages that never get more than passing interest. Even the motivated developers that experiment with languages move on after a time if they can't do anything more

Agreed. I'm a long time Perl user but I think C# (and Visual Studio) is well done and keeps getting better. That said, the Web Forms model has always been a bane for me. It violates so much that is web--from hijacking the HTML ID attribute

You can improve your speed a great deal just by reading the introductory tips in most speed reading courses. Most of it comes down to observing how your eyes work mechanically and trying to make the input process more efficient. Probably th

This is similar to comments I've heard from profs in the CS area. It's probably cultural. We still have the students that break their backs to be the best, but the majority have been indoctrinated in this "everyone's a winner" mentality.
