Congrats Eric! Being on the bestseller list should drive awareness of your methodologies to a broader group. You've been working hard at it. Keep it up!

Marcelo presented this at the HN Seattle Meeup last night. It was primarily a backdrop for his talk. The most interesting point, IMO, was the cyclical trend he observed in the number of startups registered on the site.

Node would work well since it's designed to support async patterns. You're right that the challenge is the polling model that you have to implement when using MongoDB as the queue. To get throughput, you may have to use it as a journal and

If you put this behind, say a REST API vs using MongoDB directly, the clients could use long polling. If you look at Twitter's Kestrel, it was implemented with a similar mechanism, albeit leveraging some capabilities that were intrinsic to

Many languages have unexpected pronoun usage that newcomers must get used to. Many Indo-European languages have a formal 'you', for example. With French, it's the same as 2nd person plural (you). With German, it's the same as 3rd person plu

Ditto. I've been an Amazon user since the late 90s. They've got an incredible amount of user data about me, including wishlists with thousands of items. That all ends about two years ago. This is when I started buying digital books on my wi

I've been noticing it more frequently as well. It has changed the way I use HN. Now, I quickly scan the first page and open interesting stories in tabs. Then I quickly click More and do the same. Wash, rinse, repeat two or three times depen

"Better" perhaps, but also different. I think Derek's post was more about culture and less about daily life and modes of thought. I enjoyed both.

There's no mention of the distinction between the file system and the compute portion. Also, no mention of the particular computational approach (e.g., map/reduce). Arguably one of Hadoop's big benefits is HDFS.

I'm working on YAMRF (yet another MR framework) in C#. I wanted something like Hadoop but something that was much simpler to setup and to hack on. There's no question that Hadoop is the elephant in the room, so to speak. It is very robust a

I don't think this is helpful. He can provide for his family with out a "9 to 5". He could contract remotely, for example. And he could work on side projects with an eye to the future, which would help keep his spirits up through this perio

There are some interesting ideas here, but it's a little heavy on opinion. Rob's obviously an agile zealot. These myths he's refuting are not universal, though. For example, pair programming doesn't work for everyone, nor does the open offi

This is a very timely article for me. The place that I work used to have an office about a 12 minute drive from my house. It was a temporary solution (that ended up lasting over a year) and we needed to find a more permanent location. It wa

Ah, things have obviously moved on since I left the Java world years ago. In any event, the VM is still specified at the bytecode level. The JITs are optimizations that are outside of the standard. The .NET ECMA standard specifies an IL tha

In addition, the JVM is just that--a VM. The platforms that run .NET with a JIT compile the IL down to optimized native code. This is similary to the way many Lisps work. Although the JVM is highly optimized and runs faster than Mono in man

First off, keep things simple. Don't dive into Linux, Emacs/VIM, etc. right away if you don't already know them. Your goal is to learn programming. Next, you probably have an idea about where you want to be with your business. Is it mobile?
