@ibisum if you read this: I am sorry to see that your account has been hellbanned; you should probably create another, as your comments are hidden to most users.

Quite a few people who were familiar with software (one works at HP, one at Cisco) were excused from the jury, because they would already have her own interpretation of the law — opinions you cannot set aside, as the judge put it. Here's a

Scrubbing the Java name is just obeying trademark law (only Sun can allow you to use that name, and you'll have to licence the TCK and manage to pass it). I don't see what trademark law has to do with the case, except that Oracle wants to l

It depends how you arrive at it. If you visit coupons.com, the couponsinc.com policy is linked at the bottom of the page, and the exception covers any meaningful use of coupons.com (but not random browsing without typing out any information

You're really misrepresenting that thread. Here[1] Linus says C is pretty readable in patch format, because it doesn't do overloading (unlike C++, which was the thread's conversation topic) and thus doesn't much depend on some outside conte

Especially here where it's cheap linkbait for an article whose actual claim seems to be “Gee, REST is hard to get right sometimes”. Not that I like the inflamed rhetoric of an actual “considered harmful” call to arms, either.

This is intended as a way to run computation close to data. Some databases embed Lua or pluggable languages for that; ZeroVM can run NaCL binaries (compiled with a special toolchain), verified in the same manner as the JVM checks bytecode,

No. All this means is that the delta will be lower, and new kernel work will be able to cross-polinate a bit more easily. Though manufacturers don't really follow the mainline's upgrade path, and it seems like they will converge on this (em

Configurability is generally a bad idea for a sandbox. Here the configuration seems to allow whitelisting a few extra modules that do not allow working around the sandbox, but increase the attack surface for bugs in the implementation (beca

Most pull requests are the url of a repo and the name of a branch. Without a sha1, those aren't tamper-proof. Another option is to make pull requests for signed tags, which build on GPG trust; or to GPG-sign a pull request email containing

OK, it's a screwy compromise, and it wasn't exactly intended by a single party. But it's happening anyway, in the sense that Google is awarding money for full exploits, and ZDI is awarding money for something that is both tasteless advertis

Whatever the price, Google won't root out all the vulnerabilities. A (relatively) smaller price gets people to compete for fame, which can be a more powerful motivation; a large price gets people to compete for the money, but Google may not
