Pointing out that the actual cost of a carrier is far higher than $6B (true) is not a point in your favor. The opportunity cost needs to be considered — what could you do with your, um, entire naval budget if you weren't obsessed with

As I understand it, back in the 80s US carriers were regularly destroyed in joint naval exercises with Australia by diesel submarines (inexpensive ones of the kind owned by all of our enemies). They're very quiet when running on batt

I suspect that the problem would not be huge (but it would need addressing). The key would be making accessing the emergency safety net sufficiently unpleasant/inconvenient as to dissuade casual fraud. (The welfare equivalent of being

Yahoo got where it was by being the first directory on the web. It was terrible — to get listed you had to submit an application and then whether and how you were listed was based on someone's arbitrary decision. It was like The App St

It seems that (a) we need Dynamic features (introspection, dynamic dispatch) and (b) we need to use it sparingly. In short, it's a _cultural_ problem, not a technical one. I suspect the solution is something as simple as a "Danger

That's as clear as mud. What does a -20 vs. a 20 mean? That it was colder at noon than at midnight? Assuming that there was some sensible definition (e.g. deviation from the past mean temperature, which is not at all what was stated) t

Can you give some examples where it's more representative? Average height? Average income? There are a lot of arguments in favor of median as a more intuitive replacement (and it is frequently used thus) but consider that: a) Some peop

Really? > Do you take every observation: square it, average the total, then take the square root? Or do you remove the sign and calculate the average? Neither of these is even an attempt to measure average daily temperature variation.

If you want to critique that sentence, you're going about it the wrong way. The whole reason for Flash's tenacity in the video market was its thorough support for DRM. This is decidedly _not_ an advantage of HTML5.

Is it just me or does this code seem to have an off-by-one error (i.e. throwing on toIndex > arrayLen and not toIndex >= arrayLen, given that the lower bound check implies zero-based arrays)?

It would have been more honest to modify the headline and put corrections inline, for sure. (Still, 170x faster is not bad — I would still have clicked :-) )

The writer disbelieved their own results, got others to double and triple check their work, and when the correct explanation emerged, published a correction. I think you're being overly harsh (and, in the end, the results were very clo

Does Electron have native UI components? I use Atom/Nuclide daily and it looks like a web app to me (aside from file requesters).

I think the economics of food production will probably trounce that of power production. In any event, it's more efficient to stick solar panels in the desert and wire electricity to places that are less sunny.

Right, but easier doesn't mean useful. E.g. One of the easiest steps in comparing salaries across countries is exchange rate, but it's not nearly as useful as a list of local prices for commonly needed stuff. E.g. In Singapore wh

It's very hard to make these kinds of comparison (take a look at the Economist's Big Mac index which attempts to illustrate relative buying power in different places). Similarly income tax may be low (e.g. Texas) but property taxe
