So, one-letter English labels were deemed bad coding-style for decades, but suddenly one-letter Greek labels are good because some X-language (Julia) supports it. Seriously? How about single-letter Chinese labels? because that is my backgro

Julia does not have offset arrays. There is an external Julia package that can mimic Fortran's intrinsic behavior (arbitrary start index).

I doubt your baseless doubt. What do you mean by outdated? do you mean those decades-old features like "modules" that other "modern" languages (like C++) are now adding in 2021? Or do you mean vectorized array syntax tha

You can write bad code in any language. The verbosity and restrictions of (modern) Fortran standards leave significantly less room for developer mistakes, much better than C/C++.

The fact that Fortran applications are not collected in a single page by a for-profit company that does not exist in the case of Fortran, does not in anyway prove that new applications moving away from Fortran.

Fortran is quite heavily used in computational science domain. Both the "old" (F66, F77, F90) and the new modern F2003, F2008, F2018. and Yes, (modern) Fortran feeds my family daily (along with many other computational tools and s

Fortran is NOT a systems programming language. It is a niche language for scientific computing and why it is called (mathematical) Formula Translator (a.k.a Fortran).

The literal constants in this code are not in double precision and the results will not be accurate up to 64bit representation. Also, Fortran compiler optimizations can change the order of computations to generate the result faster. This do

The Fortran standard is deliberately silent about the passing method. However, virtually all Fortran compilers pass by reference.

Julia has a long way to get there, where Fortran is in terms of stability and maturity, needs approximately 60 years more.

The problem with Julia is that there is so much hype around it, likely because of the for-profit company behind Julia. I see a non-negligible number of false claims and false promises on Julia's performance on the web every now and the

Fortran is a fully-vectorized and parallelized language at all levels, from instructions to shared and distributed parallelism (corresponding to one-sided MPI communications). This has been the case for at least 3 decades if not more. There

For heavens sake, let's stop the discussion of Fortran array index starting at 1. In Fortran the starting index can be anything. A(-10:-5) is valid, A(-10:10) is valid, A(1:10) is valid, A(0:10) is valid. Choose what you want and do no

Fortran has been using `int8`, `int16`, `int32`, `int64`, and `real32`, `real64`, `real128` kinds officially for at least 2 decades. `double precision` has been long declared obsolescent, although still supported by many compilers. Regardin

Modern Fortran (2008/2018) syntax is a bliss. You would almost not notice if your are coding in MATLAB or Fortran with the advantage of your code being orders of magnitude faster in Fortran. Those who criticize the syntax of Fortran ha

But even "relatively straightforward idiomatic code" is highly opinionated and developer dependent. For example, the array operation `a(:) = b(:) + c(:)` is very well known to be slower (and much uglier) than `a = b + c` in Fortra
