All of the limitations you mentioned sound Apple-imposed, as Android supports all of those features over sms / mms / rcs except replies/threads, and none of that is even slightly new.

The original founders are still there, and presumably could speak their displeasure. They were running things at the parent company until 2019, too. It doesn't seem like Google has changed since then.
