That's not nice, that's just smart. Delete production, and someone will notice right away. Leave production as it is, and they might not notice until the bill comes due.

I regularly read Singal-Minded and it still took me until "I am a lawyer" before I scrolled back up and checked the author name.

I agree that sending cleartext over the internet in this day and age is a bad idea. But "encrypt all communication at the application layer" doesn't have to be the only solution. There's also "encrypt communication

I'm an English speaker, so I'm curious: Italian technically requires some accent marks, right? Do you have a quick way to do those from a US layout, or do you just ignore them in casual conversation the way people tend to ignore c

I think we just have a difference of opinion (or a different use case) when it comes to threaded channels. Personally, I don't have any use for them in any of the small Discord groups that I'm in, so I'm perfectly happy with

Not from Cloudflare, but at a guess: * They already have some pretty deep Rust experience on staff * They were already dissatisfied with the performance penalty from Lua's GC, so Go's GC was presumably unattractive as well * Rust

My guess is that a lot of small, tightly-knit (i.e. everybody knows everybody already) servers don't need or want all of the extra "community" stuff. Community features seem like they're mostly for managing loosely-knit

NetMaker is another: https://www.netmaker.org/ Compared to Tailscale the main weak point of these clones seems to be ACLs. Tailscale's system is very robust and surprisingly simple. The others I've seen are less w

Living on your own vs. having a family (even just a spouse) makes a huge difference here. Feeding just-yourself vs. feeding yourself-plus-others can make the difference between "Groceries are at the bottom of my expense list" and

IMO for two reasons, separated by player type. Casual players were turned off by the grind, and experienced players (read: players of former games) were turned off by the dumbed-down mechanics as compared to previous games. By the latter I

Oh cool! I played for a while back in the post-TribesNext days, but haven't touched it in years. Are there still pubs at all, or do you pretty much have to wait for a scheduled game?

I think it just pushes a whole bunch of the HN zeitgeist's happy buttons: * Small, scrappy team taking on the big incumbents that everybody hates (AWS) * Heavy focus on efficiency / latency * Deep expertise in their areas of focus

Hasn't this been the case since Windows 7? I know 7/10 had the option to disable it, and it sounds like Windows 11 has removed that choice, but it's been clear what Microsoft has had in mind for a while now.

Tailscale has three main pieces of functionality over vanilla Wireguard: Automatic peer configuration, NAT holepunching, and network ACLs. I won't talk much about ACLs since if you're the only user on your VPN, they don't mat

The thing I've never understood about Opera is - what were they missing? They pioneered a ton of features that are now ubiquitous, like tabs and "speed dial," but somehow never managed to gain much market share. Why not?
