It is not a human but it is a fellow intelligent system. Mankind had this discussion before. When Darwin published his theory about evolution. He faced a lot of hatred because it made humans less special. Now we go through the same dance ag

Big media companies go fuck yourself. That nightmare scenario, for Levin, would turn a Food & Wine review into a simple text recommendation of a bottle of Malbec. If there is just one wine review on the web which re

"Thousands of IPs" can not hurt Twitters bottom line in any way. With a "read 10 tweets per IP per day" limit, that is 10k tweets. Delivering 10k tweets does not even cost a penny.

My solution is to make it less of a walled garden. At the moment, they often refuse even reading a single tweet when not logged in. And for the "simply log-in": It is even more expensive (way more expensive) to get good email ad

First of all, Twitter does not support IPv6. Secondly, if they would, they could simply rate limit by the first x chars of the address.

I don't believe that Twitter has to limit requests to avoid bots. They would just have to limit requests by IP and thats it. Say 10 tweets per IP per day. For requests which do not come from logged in users. I can't see how scrape

And what kind of project do you run which needs up/down scaling and load balancing? In my experience, for a simple PHP web application, the smallest VMs already can handle a thousand concurrent users, which amounts to something like a

What exactly does Fly.io give you? You already know how to set up your project locally. Why not just do the same setup on any cloud VM and boom it is online?

What do people get out of using special services like Fly.io instead of standard VMs like the ones you can get from $5/month these days? Can anybody who uses Fly.io explain their rationale? Why do the additional integration with Fly.io

I hate systemd with a passion, but I won't fiddle with Debian to get rid of it. I would love if a major distro emerges which works with human-readable scripts and logs and stays away from any "binary" formats for system confi

Ok, you are tired of Self-Driving, VR, Crypto, AI and other upcoming technologies. Is there anything on the horizon you are interested in / enthusiastic about?

What is going on with the reflexive upvoting of articles arguing against new technologies here on HN? Are there any upcoming technologies HN does not have an aversion toward?

The problem even with DRM-free epubs is that: A) I don't see a reason why some mega-cooperations should know about every book I buy. B) You don't know if they have been watermarked. I don't want every book I own to be waterma

Here in Europe, we are in a paradoxical downward spiral. And unfortunately, I see no end to it. Understandably, we don't want our citizens to be spied upon by the US and have all that data stored in the US. Unfortunately, our "sol

I'm still not sure if we (here in Europe) gain anything from all this work the GDPR causes. For myself, Google never seemed to pick up which websites I visit. At least ads never followed me around. Probably because of my surfing habits

I guess you could just proxy a normal SQLite DB? Should take only a few lines of PHP. Maybe just one: echo DB::select($_GET['query']); All that is needed is a VM in the cloud. A VM with 10 GB is just $4/month these d
