As an outsider (PhD student in a quantitative field, no relation to physics), the experimental physics community really strikes me as a class act. High standards for statistical significance, vigorously working to rule out mundane explanati

I am glad to hear that. If I understand your product I'm a prime target: once or twice a year I plan travel where my flexibility in terms of airport, days, etc. is far too complicated for even the ITA matrix (the best flight search I k

Yes, after reading the article I'm not sure how they correct for the stark differences between places. Are the quintiles done locally or nationally? If they're done locally, then people who migrate are a problem for the statistics

Even for those of us just learning, far more "productivity" is required. If I wrote a paper every 4 years, my PhD program would be a 10-14 year program.

It's also worth noting that anyone attempting to use a plane as a missile against a particular target is fighting the clock. It would take some time for the hijackers to breach the cockpit (whatever the method), and in that time it is

I found this very troubling: "I wasn’t drinking enough water. At the factory, Rob told me that was a common mistake; since Soylent is a shake, people figure they don’t have to drink extra water—an easy way to get dehydrated." Fail

The 520 really is a fantastic phone for its price point. Less than $100 no contract, and for 99% of daily activities I find it to be as good as or better than my friends' iPhones and Galaxies.

One would hope that Nest would deal with dismissals differently depending on what is detected and at what concentrations.

Also, proper equipment is falling in price rapidly. You can buy an Anova immersion circulator for $200 (used to be $300 until the Sansaire kickstarter showed up). I see no reason to believe that the market has bottomed out; the components a

How does such a system work with very hot matter, e.g. plasma in a fusion chamber? I assume some sort of medium (i.e. not vacuum) is needed to propagate the waves, and that at the temperatures necessary for fusion the medium would turn to p

I noticed this as well. In an extreme case, we may see very small variance among placebo or control groups and several clusters in the group using an experimental drug. If one or more of those clusters significantly beats the control group

Stop and go may be inefficient since it takes a lot of energy to get a still car moving. Regenerative braking can't capture all of the energy lost when decelerating. That said, city driving may still be more efficient than highway in an ele
