There is no licensing cost for Carplay, nor does Apple Pay car makers. It is purely a customer satisfaction feature. The implementation is technically pretty simple to setup on the scale of any mass-market vehicle. You can think of it as a

It does need to process the data. The server has no persistent storage and no remote shell. It is a limited and locked down special-purpose iOS.

Ajax is the name of their home-grown LLM. Ferret UI is another model that they have published papers on that lets them look at the UI of an app to understand how to interact and automate it.

I thought it was very cool and very close to what I had hoped that they would do. Does that automatically make me into someone from PR? What is the benefits package, in that case? /s

They seem to have kept the OpenAI integration to a minimum, only using it for requests that need large scale processing or for web trivia type of requests.

Only in response to some classes of requests. They didn’t go into detail about when but they said that the local Siri LLM would evaluate the request and decide if it could be services locally, in their private cloud AI, or would need to use

Yes, this is an extension of that feature and a further integration with other enhancements. Apple has been doing “machine learning” for years for features like this. Now they are starting to bring those features together using other models

I would expect it to be situational. I also was happy to see that they introduced a typed interface to Siri so you can do this without speaking.

There is a lot less fodder for inaccuracies if the data and processing are all on your device. A lot of the inaccuracies in Gemini and ChatGPT arise because they are using the web for answers and that is a much less reliable source than you

It would be a very surprising business arrangement if that was not explicitly called out. Apple is not going to leave this to chance.

The information provided for level two is end to end encrypted and not stored so the risk level is pretty low here.

I like that they finally brought typing interaction to Siri. You won't always need to use voice. This does look like a real-world implementation of the concept promoted by Rabbit. Apple already had the App Intents API mechanism in plac

I'm glad that they finally brought a better window tiling system. If that sherlocks a couple of dozen utility apps, I'm OK with that. it has been long enough. Some of those apps will be fine as they will probably provide more cont

Yes, they mentioned ChatGPT. Siri reviews the request and decided if it can respond on its own or if it needs ChatGPT. It then pops up a dialog asking if it is OK ti send the request to ChatGPT. It will not be the default LLM.

Web answerbots require massive amounts of data. An LLM that handles useful tasks on device mainly needs a language model and data about apps, APIs, and services on device. I want the latter, not the former.

Do you use cmd + ` (tilde key) to cycle through windows within an app? Its the key just above Tab and that's probably why it was chosen.

True, but it has been essential for a long time before the notch for those of us with a non-trivial amount of software. The menu bar is a popular spot and so many apps want to put an icon there.

Yea, not sure about that number for private charging ports. They certainly don’t know about the Level-2 charger in my garage. I wouldn’t even include private chargers since the numbers would necessarily be unreliable.

That is a misleading article title. The vehicles tested originally got about 70% of their EPA estimated range in highway driving. After 3 years that was down to 64%. Since they clearly were never at 100%, the actual drop in range was much s
