January 6th is a significant data point and shouldn't just be handwaved away. I've watched political correctness erode the dynamic of my own family, it's continuously sewing resent between people who have different angles of

This comment doesn't offer any practical advice on where to find content of higher quality, it just condescends people who don't feel like they have high quality options.

sha3 is a lot more power efficient when implemented in hardware, which is nice when you have an IoT device that needs to do a lot of hashing. It will also be really nice on amd_64 CPUs for doing large amounts of hashing if they ever get a s

I know why I'm taking it personally. Some people work hard to make the world a better place, and some people sit on the sidelines making comments about working harder.

What Elon does with his time and money is his own business. What are you doing to help humanity get to Mars beyond scolding the person who is arguably the greatest single contributer to humans in space of the past 20 years?

95% of the population could decide not to eat ocean fish and there'd still be enough natural demand to cause extinction. You can't solve this type of shared resource scarcity by asking individuals to abstain.

Yes, but that's a highly technical solution. I've been trying to get my girlfriend to use Authy for 6 months now, and the solution we landed on is that my Authy app has all of her 2FA codes, and she just calls me if she needs one.

In some sense of the word they are already shut down. Moderation is very heavy on both and certain topics just can't become widely shared. For example, a recent thread by a sex worker had something like 8/30 tweets censored off th

I do think all of the implications on Hans are well deserved, and the deep exploration of cheating within the chess world is well placed. And after looking through the evidence myself, I do believe that Hans is cheating in over-the-board ga

He cheated in the 2020 cash prize tournent SCC Grand Prix at the age of 17. If you are going to be snarky, at least be correct.

He's a chess prodigy not a computer nerd. It probably never even occurred to him that chess.com was tracking page focus to get a sense of cheating.

chess.com is a first rate entity in the chess world (a peer of FIDE and lichess), and Hans was caught cheating in events that had cash prizes. Hans cheated for money, that's plenty of indication that he would cheat in more important si

He's still a child. He cheated when he was 16 (now we have evidence that he cheated at 17 too), and he's only 19. I don't think a 5 year ban (or honestly, even a 10 year ban) is all that extreme.

I don't think it's unreasonable to issue a 5 year ban from competitive chess to a 16 year old who gets caught cheating online in a cash prize tournament. Hans is only 3 years past his admitted cheating event, and I don't thin

There are always extra factors that can be discovered. There was a video game speedrun cheating incident where the cheater was caught splicing. But their splices were perfect. No audio artifacts, no video artifacts, for a long time no evide

One of the chief complaints here is that it was an unusual line, specifically chosen by Magnus to be unlikely to have been explored during preparation.

I believe you could have an engine look at the historical games of a player and identify the "strength" of each move. How strong (in terms of elo) does a player have to be before they find a certain move? How often do the top play

Eh casual play has so many factors. I wouldn't put much weight on how badly a gm loses on the beach. For example, drugs could have been involved. I do think Hans is cheating, but I think the proof will lie in statistical analysis of hi

Well, even endgames with as few as 5 pieces on the board are beyond what a human can solve with memorization. I don't disagree that blitz is mostly pattern recognition and rapid tactical thinking, but that applies all the way down to t

It's been in effect for this metric since the block size wars of 2016. Node count (and also validator count) has not been useful for a very long time.

Yes, its not genuine to say Eth has 400,000 validators as many of them are the same entity. It's a similar story for nodes as well. A ton of the reported nodes are actually running on AWS and ultimately its a fairly worthless metric. F
