tl;dr Wage subsidy in the form of credit extended to established companies. No benefit to you, HNers. Remember green jobs? They aren't happening. So here's an alternative. Cut sales and income tax. Impose heavy carbon tax (enough to get gas

Great comment. Gamification turns work into play. Removes guilt from play. Play is ego gratification or "flow" or a combination.

The meaning of a transaction is generally understood. All I am saying is anything that would merit a journal entry gets feed through pipe instead of consolidated and reported months (or years!) later. I will do my own accounting, you can t

Exactly. You are feeding false information into the system. Limiting the trading to epochs and holding orders levels the playing field.

Actually I disagree. Shorts one of the few cures for bubbles that we have and they are weakened greatly by institutional rules that favor promotion over rationality. But, and this is a big one, we would have to reveal trading positions dail

My point was about forward looking statements and inducing companies to reveal their rational processes. So by all means, use your gut. Then show your work. People can then bet on your gut. Or somebody else's work.

Actually I am suggesting something more innovative (radical/extreme?) to companies. Toss away those GAAP crutches, and confess to the congregation all your transactions--realtime. Enter the kingdom of Real Transparency (TM). I don't need yo

My example tax is only a conversation starter. You would be right to say that the reality is a little more complex. But not much. I worked in the bond, fx, and commodities end of Wall Street for nearly 20 years and an average guy from my ol

Simple solution. Penny a share transfer tax for all trades. Corresponding amounts on bonds and other instruments. Watch the amazing reduction in volume and volatility. Then watch the return to focus on value trading. Like that idea? Next, o

Maybe, but then again, loyalty cards with tiered rewards do that. Making customers do work to signal their price point does it (e.g. coupon clipping). Bundling can do it too. Essentially, sellers have to add complexity to keep the discrimin

I agree with most of the article. However the author suggests that the net reduces the ability for sellers to price discriminate. I think it helps both sides, and the outcome is in doubt. On the one hand it enables faster and broader flow o

Can anybody see the books on his dining room table (at 13:49)? I think I spotted Concrete Mathematics at the bottom, Duda and Hart, and Hastie, Tibshirani and Friedman. Good places to start. What would your list be for Steve?

This article seems a little out of date. It's missing most of the things I have looked at over the past year. E.g. Riak, MongoDB, Redis and so on.

Your definition of a design pattern is more precise than mine for sure. In FP its not "an abstracted, re-usable piece of functionality" unless it can be made into a library, as far as I know. But it seems to me that FP forces you to look
