There is definitely style of negative comment that attracts downvotes on HN. If you care about karma, it is usually easy to avoid as many comments in this thread point out. Unfortunately there is always a temptation with karma systems to us

The financial crisis was largely perpetrated by people who were simply doing their jobs within an absurd system. The main flaw of our system of financial oversight is its opacity. We should focus more on how to fix this and less on creating

Revenge is satisfying, but misguided, because most people assume that is enough. Criminalizing business will mean that only crooks will want to run businesses. Instead, most problems of this sort can be prevented in the first place by full

Excellent point. Instead we trust the regulators to make sure banks are a-ok. We would do well to "crowdsource" bank regulation by requiring banks to stream their positions to the public.

You are right that predicting trends is not that hard. When it comes to financial prices the issue is that you are effectively predicting small changes in trends, plus a lot of noise added on by trading activity itself. Much harder.

I don't use python much anymore, but I am often surprised when talking to python programmers, that if I mention ipython and introspection (e.g. dir() ) they look at me funny. They are missing half the niceness!

Google can buy companies, much like Berkshire Hathaway, and does, so they don't really need to be a hedge fund for that purpose. If you think they want to trade securities and futures, they wouldn't need to be a hedge fund to do that either

Since about 40% of the CPI is housing, and that component is calculated in a way that reduces the volatility of CPI, and essentially ignored the entire housing bubble, then any alternative to government statistics is welcome. It is as if th

Interesting example. In Mathematica, they opted for fully spelled out function names with caps to indicate new words for minimal ambiguity. For example LinearSolve is not linsolve or lnsolve or lsolve or even ls as it is in other languages

The best way to tell a good recruiter from a clueless (normal) one is whether they have an exclusive arrangement with the employer. This is as rare as good recruiters are. It is more common in hiring for senior jobs in big companies.

Two reasons: Reading is (or can be) a form of entertainment, so it doesn't matter. Recall and recognition are two different things. For example, you can learn to recognize a face and still be terrible at describing it. The same applies to o
