Complain if you must, but there is a serious point involved. People get invested in technology and they start to adopt certain patterns of argument that stem more from their own investment than anything else. I tried to highlight the patter

I know it's fun to rag on Roman numerals, but they were never intended for totaling receipts. They were never designed for quick little sums, they were designed for engraving on massive long lasting objects like buildings and copyright noti

Or a hacker space. Lots of like minded people to share ideas with, help, and be helped by. My favorite is Hacker Dojo in Mountain View. What's yours?

I didn't mean to pick on Patrick. This "honored/humbled" thing has been going on in our culture for a while now.

Why are people always feeling "honored and humbled" these days? I think they must be confused. Just feel honored and get on with your day.

It's absurd to say they are "uncontacted". They are humans after all. How can such a smart crowd fall for that headline stuff? Concerns about their public health and inability to defend their property rights (our interpretation of those rig

Perhaps they have something to teach us as well. We should at least ask for directions to El Dorado, before we convert them to OS X and give them some french fries.

When a field like apps is so new, the effort required to innovate is low. People bring their expectations about the level of effort from areas where expertise is well developed. Think of databases and algorithms. Eventually novelty apps wi

Straw man? No. Satire, and freaking hilarious at that. Tim F. doesn't need HNers to help him get across. He knows his game. It's about attention, not reaction or judgement. This is attention at its most attentive.

Ready for linkbait, I read the article and...it's good! If open source figures into you company's strategy, as it does more often these days, you need to do it professionally. Yes, even if it is free .

The article is a waste of time. Just explains that he charges high fees and makes more when his clients do. Perhaps someone can comment on the positions that paid off.

"He's young". "He's actually a nice guy". These are the kinds of statements that should only carry weight when you have a personal relationship. A relationship with a company/website/app is no more or less than the sum of your interaction

I like Gruen's idea. Try this one on: We could have size investors continuously publish their postions. A 10000 investor x 10000 securities matrix would be more than enough. Price vol would drop like a stone.

I was describing an equilibrium model like Debreu's (very sweeping by the way), where information is not really explicit. Hayek's opinion about the hopelessness of central planning is more about the role of markets in eliminating the comput

I agree. I hope that more journals adopt the JMLR model. The university system is already paying for all the editors we need. No need to pay twice now that distribution costs are near zero.

Once you have board they're your boss. Remember those? Their most distinguishing feature is they can fire you much, much easier than you can fire them. Bob Dylan wrote a song about this. Upvotes for the correct title... As for the other boa
