Seriously Robert Anton Wilson's books changed the way I look at the world. I started with "Prometheus Rising" and followed that with "Quantum Psychology." Honestly the two best books I've ever read (Ishmael by Daniel Quinn is close).

I think making forking cheap and easy is a good idea. Sure, bad forks will be made but, Git would make it easy to merge the fork's changes into a trusted stream.

If portability is a concern, I recommend you check out Bazaar.

I appreciate the effort you've expended to setup a new news site but, I'm unlikely to ever venture there. If in fact, this act betters Hacker News, I'm even less likely to venture there.

I have a similar work flow to yours and I experience many of the same problems you do with DVCS. I'm currently thinking about just using rsync to keep my development environments the same. I haven't made this move yet but, I can't think w

A good question to be sure but, I don't think that we should consider that disk as a backup intended for us. FSM forbid that something terrible should happen to us, perhaps another intelligent species may find it long after we're gone.

As people generating entertainment for their readers, you're right. It was a good story. But, as "journalist" they, in my opinion, are lazy. They failed to fully research the issue and present it as clearly as possible.

I don't think we ought to excuse Cuil and provide them more time before we judge the search engine. They've had all the time they needed and put out a press release saying so.

Canonical doesn't give back? What about Debian? Do their changes propagate through those channels?

I'm curious why no one is asking if this is hacker related news? An article like this seems very similar to the article posted about Obama winning the Democratic nomination and that posting received a significant amount of criticism. Is it

Pardon the brevity of my previous post. I'm sorry if it appears that I'm arguing for it's own sake. I only meant to indicate that we currently have an implemented definition of "better" between posts--the HN ranking algorithm. I believe

You didn't provide a definition of better.

I then argue that "better" as defined by the HN heuristic is exactly defined as an article with more points.

Even without the ability to downvote, doesn't the position of the article indicate that there isn't a better article?

Given the position of this article, it appears that the rest of the community disagrees.

Right, let's reduce education! Ignore the order of magnitude more funding provided to the Department of Defense. This never made any sense to me. I target my voting like I optimize my code. Look for the biggest inefficiencies and start t

After reading this: "While working at I.B.M.’s Thomas J. Watson Jr. Research Laboratory in New York, Mr. Gray asked his boss if he could relocate to an I.B.M. laboratory in San Jose. When he was told that he couldn’t, he said, “All right, t

I don't think that I would ever hire a insert language programmer. When looking for someone to program, I'm just looking for a programmer; language isn't important.

There is a high ration of signal/noise on Reddit and PBS alike. This may very well succeed but, it might just be preaching to the choir. I was about to comment that I was happy that the information on Reddiit was going to reach a larger au

There was almost no information related to Provigil in that article. Sure, we got the standard, "Drugs are bad. Mmmmm...K?" But, that's just more noise. Why is is so hard to get signal on this topic? Besides, I think that it's clear that
