I'm sure they are. And regular old phones are apparently working (who'd have thought it!!!) so modem to modem, bbs style, is an option to bridge wifi/packet gaps.

There's a 14 day expiry on that domain name (at least on 8.8.8.8, google's DNS server). So you should be good for something close to that, my guess, up to 14d - 6h from when the BGP routes were dropped. So your main issue is for .eg urls th

Getting quite OT here. I was looking at building a AX.25 node 10 years ago, with a 15km range on a basic amateur license, with maybe 28kbps. Almost all integrated into a radio with a digital output that cost the same as a PC. That's what I

Good idea, sadly OpenBTS being 1/10 the cost of existing infrastructure, still makes it (ballpark figure) $5k to operate something like the BurningMan 1 BTS network (so cheap in the telco world! Ohh, I'm not considering the power system in

The problem is, running something like this would be a) illegal due to frequency problems and b) if we leave aside the legal implications, you might be killing valid emergency service calls. That said I think it's excellent for the direc

Well Simon touts Lanyrd as a "wikipedia for conferences". Well that's selling it a bit short. But Wikipedia manages to survive quite happily without being a "viable business".

Because lots of people on Hacker News love this site, and quite frankly want it to succeed, because no other site really comes close.

This is approximately a "double major". For those in the UK unaware, "X and Y" suggests an approximate 50:50 split. "X with Y" suggests a heavy emphasis on X, more of a 75:25 split. And as others have pointed out, in the UK, apart from in s

And there we go. Taking a short-cut when the well established long route is clearly more sustainable, more likely to produce results and going to be cheaper. Hacks are just that, hacks. Used short term to solve a problem, not fix the cause.

The problem is how it's measured. Is that measured as door to door at the gym? Weight room door to weight room door? Or time on the iron? If you measure time on the iron, it is very short. The reality is a lot of your time is spent between

It is a case of letting the best people determine when a new tool will speed up a process and having the environment where they can take the time to write the tool. Too often the environment is hostile to what might be a risky investigation

A number of good responses about writing good tools. That's a no brainer. It's scary to how many project managers I've had to explain why I have allocated 20% of my project planning to writing a new tool. They see it as wasted time because

I agree. I'm not sure what the whole buzz about Q&A is right now. Stack Overflow certainly fills a niche that had, before, been filled by lots of independent "specialist" forums. Having that community under one roof is great, there are

"UX overhaul" - I'd suggest what you are talking about is actually "visual design" and not "UX". Lacks focus? Disagree. Lacks the touch of a seasoned designer, agreed. sigh "UX" overused and generally misunderstood.

You'd hope so! I know most of Facebook would be classed as engineers, vs. a lot of Yahoo as sales, support, etc. But really? 1/10th the employees, you'd expect their salary bill would be less.
