I don't know if creepy is the right word, but I get a weird feeling about it. It isn't that I feel like I'm losing my privacy by people seeing things I posted on facebook years ago, it is more that I am not that person anymore - I liked th

I've only just started working through the big nerd ranch iphone guide and have a few basic, simple ideas for apps that I'll be trying to get onto the app store within the next couple months. No real delusions of grandeur, I'm just curious

Wow, nice find, never even thought to dig in to that. If you check out the notifo services, they have the information on setting everything up.

I think this brings up something that has bothered me a little bit about the comment system here. I would really like some kind of notification system when someone has replied to a post of mine because once a link falls off the front page,

I'm about half way through it, though I'm the one who submitted this post. I've been reading since his first Gervais Principle post and really enjoy the way he writes. That being said Tempo is a lot lower level writing than most of the blog

My sister has actually been telling me about this. She has gotten in to "extreme couponing", and there are big groups online sharing information on where to get things from local grocery stores for free or less with promotions like double c

Since I'm taking a Cobol class this next semester for a similar reason, I went searching for whats out there and found some people attempting that: https://github.com/dayashi/cobor

Thanks. I've known about the iPhone application programming course from previous semesters, so this looks promising that they may offer it again this fall. I didn't have a mac until recently, so it will be nice if they do since xcode has ch

All of these online Stanford classes seem very cool. I hope that enough people sign up for these that grading and certificates become more popular from all of the highly respected schools.

What resources are there available, or how does someone start getting into the demoscene? Are there any good websites or books for a complete beginner?

Michael Feathers is the author of Working Effectively With Legacy Code. This is basically that software projects, as they age, have a tendency to become huge unwieldy monstrosities. While this gem is kind of a joke, reminding you of older

Cool, thanks! I whipped this up the night after the talk so there are probably some kind of inefficient parts in the interest of getting it released quickly. I'll get right on that.

There may not be a strict "Teacher/Student" analogue for CS, but it is such a young discipline that I would imagine it would be pretty easy to trace a "lineage" for everyone back to certain branching events or influencers.

I'm suggesting a little bigger than that - Blizzard is making a ton of money from WoW subscriptions every month, and $12/month for turntable would be pretty easy for me to justify.

I wouldn't be surprised if they start seeing legal trouble soon if it hasn't started already. I would gladly pay money to use it, if it comes to that, as I haven't had this much fun with a site for a very long time.

There is also the cost of labor associated with upgrading. A lot of corporate IT departments don't want to spend the hours upgrading their whole infrastructure when they have other things to do - from my experience IT is expected to run wi

Same here. I found this: https://github.com/b4winckler/macvim/wiki/ChangeLog Might just have to upgrade to snapshot 59. I guess I'll find out when lion finishes downloading. But really, people actually use the open/save panels in MacVim

For #1 - I've always been pretty disappointed with the shipping companies tracking systems. Maybe I just don't understand what problems they are having, but if you have to scan items each step of the way, regardless of scale, shouldn't it

Agreed, isn't this what capitalism is supposed to get us? Competition for lower prices and better products? Saying "Sorry, your products are too good and you're offering them for too low of a price" kind of kills innovation, doesn't it?

Ah so it isn't like theres all these American companies that are going to be paying top dollar to maintain their legacy, mission critical COBOL systems. They're outsourcing it for minimum wage.

Yeah I've got Vimium, so that is pretty nice, but I still get confused a little bit when it doesn't work as I expect. Vim has ruined my mind.

This is the only downside I've found to using vi/vim full time. Wanting and expecting the keybindings everywhere, even in things like html text areas.

Have the ruby thing on github by any chance? Id love to check it out. I've been toying with the idea of writing a mud in ruby, and giving it a graphical web frontend to make it more accessible to new players.

You shouldn't look at this as a negative. For worthwhile spaces there's always room for more competitors. Finding other people doing similar things should validate your idea.
