Interesting. Quite a few venture capital firms nearby (Cologne), but I don't see any actual startups until I zoom our far enough to see the startups in other countries. (and one in Karlsruhe). Wonder what that means.

The message I get from his article, is not that "scaling to amazon levels is easy", but "scaling amazon size ideas down to a size where they are easier is possible". Isn't that part of the startup culture? That simple scaled down approaches

Practice, learn from others. Don't spend more time reading than coding, but a couple of books with good tips include "The Pragmatic Programmer" and "Apprenticeship Patterns" Also going to dojos and doing katas.

I remember when I had a C64, and my friend wanted a computer for xmas, and we were pestering his had to get the 128, which was the best computer we knew of at the time. Then on xmas day, he got an Amiga 500! We didn't even know about those.
