The blog post by Gowers that seems to have started much of the current activity is here: http://gowers.wordpress.com/2012/01/21/elsevier-my-part-in-i... There's been a lot of discussion of this on science blogs lately, and I do think the

When you say "Bean was Ender's trusted right hand," I suspect you're thinking mostly of "Ender's Shadow". Reading the original book on its own, Bean comes across as very creative with his small team but not really as a "right hand". (I'd th

The article confuses me: it seems to be conflating the RSA algorithm (which I could easily believe might be used to encrypt military GPS) with the RSA company (a division of EMC which was hacked and had its SecurID product compromised recen

CERN apparently said the following in a press release, which puts some substantial limits on what's actually going to be announced: "A seminar will be held at CERN on 13 December at which the ATLAS and CMS experiments will present the statu

Yep. (I don't recall whether Verizon charges me 10 or 20 cents per text, but it's one of the two.)

I find it ironic that this article features a picture of data on the Bullet cluster, which is currently one of the strongest pieces of evidence favoring dark matter as a form of matter. Hajdukovic is quoted as saying that he's "currently ex

I disagree. If I get a warning out of the blue, yeah, I take it seriously: something unexpected is going on, and I'm not going to trust the server until I know what it is. But if I know there's going to be a server upgrade overnight and I g

It doesn't stand on its own terribly well without some substantial discussion in class to back it up, but here's a handout that I've given to classes to try and discuss this stuff a little: http://othello.alma.edu/~jensens/teaching/classes

Two comments. First, as she alludes to in her edit, the "rotated arrow" picture that RobotRollCall uses here is subtly backward. It does suggest the right things and I used to think of it that way, but it eventually gets you in trouble. (In

Is this "called out by Mozilla" or "called out by Asa Dotzler"? After all, Benjamin Smedberg just posted a reply that begins "Asa is wrong": http://benjamin.smedbergs.us/blog/2010-11-29/software-integr... If Asa's post represented officia

There's a big gap between "not all that hard" and "something you have time to create from scratch for every problem on every exam in all of your classes every term". In general, creating good, well-balanced problems isn't easy! And many of

I'm not interested in how many of them there are, I'm interested in what they show. And from what I've seen of those galleries, a number of these supposed scanner images show people who aren't in the scanner . If you can explain to me how

Backscatter X-ray scanners use X-ray photons. Millimeter-wave scanners use far-infrared/microwave photons. To the best of my knowledge, nobody's every shown that microwaves or infrared light cause cancer: the photons just don't have enough

The fact that you can see the next person in line proves that this picture is a blatant fake. (Note how the apparent sizes of the two people are identical to the actual photo: I guarantee that the x-ray camera isn't sitting at the same posi

This is largely correct, but "largely" isn't the same as "entirely" and there are some major blunders. (For heaven's sake don't use it for that tattoo!) The first big one is that there is no letter for 'c' in any Elvish alphabet. Elvish w
