That title is straight out of a cyberpunk novel.

In my town, population went down but children-per-family decreased even more, effectively raising the number of households/family-units that needed separate homes. A raw population count is not always what it seems.

How feasible is transmitting power from a central point to everywhere on the continent? Wouldn't the losses make this a nonstarter? A single power plant is a single source of failure. Handing over the nation's power needs to a pro

This perspective has a huge following on Hacker News and it's baffling. This site celebrates clever reuse of technology, creative thinking, and open source. But when Apple comes up, some people close down completely and the sharply def

I've seen at least one hacker do this. It's not so much the voltage but you need to provide a valid temperature sensor as well (the 3rd pin on most phone batteries).

It's too bad that Apple hardware is arguably impossible for this use case. You can't flash a custom ROM so you're limited to what the OS allows (which isn't much). And that's only if you have a developer account tha

I bought a set of analog ("actual vernier") calipers for daily use. I don't really need more than 0.1mm accuracy anyway. At the same time, I soldered a tiny power switch into my cheap calipers to stop the battery drain issue.

I want a cheap home smart camera that offer good local control. It seems like the premium jump from Wyze is like $100 per camera.

Smart switches+dumb lights are far superior to dumb switches+smart lights. Why go to all that effort and money for a poor outcome? A smart switch: - Allows for anyone to interact with the light without apps/voice/whatever. You jus

Is Cambridge a suburb of Boston? You've also called out Watertown, Arlington, etc as modern American suburbs before but their density ranks well above major cities. But that's because they're not modern American suburbs. They

The suburbs around Boston are effectively dense cities because they predate railroads, nevermind cars. You don't need skyscrapers to claim "density".

There are ineffective managers but there are also ineffective ICs. With WFH, there are definitely people trying to do as little as possible. Objectively measuring people's effectiveness at work is hardly a solved problem.

This is some weird rural populist hogwash with no basis in reality. The economy is a highly interdependent system. Cities need farms and farms need cities.

Speaking as an Arlington resident, I would not describe it as "car centric", although cars are accommodated far more than I would like. It's still a classical streetcar suburb. The majority of Arlington's housing stock i

Radio time has never worked for me in Boston on any of the devices I've owned. I'm sure I'm not alone. It's simply too far away or there's too much interference or both.

If you watch enough tool teardowns (AvE, etc), most gears are sintered metal or plastic. I'm sure large industrial applications use machined gears but it looks like consumer-prosumer space goes for much cheaper fare.

The age old story of the EU lagging behind the US in regulation. (snort) What is the EU marketshare on stoves? As an importer, could EU natgas already have a premium attached that reduces any impact from regulation?

Can you recommend a large cast iron griddle that 100% works on induction? That's no joke the biggest sticking point for us right now. The closest we can find is "square frying pan" style. The 2 Lodge griddles are double sided
