Indeed. And preloading of pages isn't "cheating" either. Safe preloading is the entire reason for AMP's existence. They're designed to open quickly as embedded content. Doing a direct comparison is kind of missin

Search speed was already a ranking factor. It didn't have much effect on publishers, who continued to bloat their pages. As for why they didn't just "dial it up to 11", I'm guessing that would cause the quality of

That seems rather unlikely. If it's not the browser itself, then it's more likely to be an extension inserting it.

Outside of a few trolly throwaways, the thread seemed reasonable enough last night. After being unflagged though, it's devolved even further into culture war flaming. It seems to me HN is just not a community suited to discussing topi

Chrome worked to re-enable precise timers after implementing a number of mitigation strategies. They could always lower precision again, if necessary. Though it's unfortunate how much progress and performance we've lost to Spect

I agree, but I think it's also worth learning from past experiences. Pingbacks do create a significant spam problem. How does Webmention.io cope with that?

Good point about DOM size. I wonder if using external SVGs would have had the same effect? I don't know enough about browser rendering to know if that matters.

This seems like a pretty poor take by pg. It ignores the years of friction over targeted ads that have been leading up to this change. Apple and Mozilla have also shifted strategies in this area. It seems the right time for Google to pivo
