> It is Bob’s job to get you signed with the company as cheaply as possible... Strictly speaking, this is not necessarily the case (although it might be, but you probably won't make a career at such a company.) Bob's job is to

It hasn’t been all that sudden—rather it’s been snowballing. You had stuff like the Clinton Body Bags clear back in the 90’s, Fox was hammering on the outrage button, sites like Breitbart took that to eleven, Trump took advantage of that to

Here I think is the difference between a book and a live person: The show’s producers say the program is meant as an educational tool to fight body shaming and encourage body positivity. And so first reluctantly, later enthusiastically,

I've written quite a bit of Groovy code and IME that never changes. It's a very pragmatic and productive language, but whenever you run into some bug or weird edge case you'll rue the day James Strachan was born. :)

Which makes sense when you think about it for a moment. Being an expert Java developer doesn't make you good at--or necessarily even interested in becoming good at--legalese.

This is something I really like about the recent direction of JVM languages. It takes a bit for useful things to make their way into Java itself, but by the time they do they're well-shaken and we can see how they got used in practice.

It's dumbfounding how awful bank websites are at security. They started with the stupidest conceivable way to implement two-factor--a second clear-text password that is an answer to a very small number of secret questions. Then they li

This is an overly broad statement. Everywhere I've worked where I'm expected to be reachable by phone offered a stipend to pay for the service. And all of them were respectful of my personal time. An abusive employer is going to m

You can also get the actual arcade boards and cartridges relatively easily. LGR posted a video on his NeoGeo setup a little while back if anybody's interested in going that route. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eqi30E

Indeed this would be the fourth time they successfully switched architectures. They went from m68k, to PPC, to x86. Apple is in a pretty unique position in that they make both their hardware and software ecosystem. It gives them a lot of fl

There's a pretty substantial difference between immigration and conquest. The former in no way requires the latter.

Literally nobody is arguing that there ought to be no immigration laws at all. But obviously we can treat the families of natural born citizens better without completely letting the whole system fall to anarchy.

It's a shame really. I bet GP would never say something so cruel to OP's face, but somehow when it's just words on a screen folks lose all sense of empathy and civility.

Personally I just use Shift-Shift for practically everything. Saves me learning someone else's keymap or dealing with platform-specific bindings, and there are quite a few useful commands that aren't bound to keys anyway.

Huh, never realized that was a thing. Do the shortcuts in the menu show the QWERTY key or the Dvorak one? I'm curious how you learn the shortcuts if it still shows the QWERTY keys.

Fair point, but considering OpenBSD's goal is to be absolutely secure and NetBSD's goal is to "just work" on basically anything you want to run it on reconciling that would be at least as much work as just forking and th

Why not just actually use comments? If it's worth explaining to new developers it'll likely be useful later when you've simply forgotten why something is the way it is.

I'd count the OpenBSD split as a net positive though. They're now different projects with different goals, both worthy in their own respects.

I use Siri to set alarms and timers since that's far and away more convenient than opening the app and switching to the right tab and futzing with the time dial. If I've got my phone in my pocket and my hands full it's helpfu
