Contrary to some other advice here, I switched to a new window manager first (xmonad, FWIW), but kept running a bunch of GNOME stuff too. Gradually, I have phased out most of GNOME and my computing life is simpler and more stable as a resul

I love the static nature of Wikipedia's design.

I haven't seen anyone from Open Whisper Systems speak out about this. One of the things they like best about the current/deprecated Chrome app is the distribution and update model. I'm not sure how much that will affect their

Signal-desktop runs on Linux and Windows too (and pairs with Signal on Android).

The GoToMeeting web client works in Chromium on Arch for me. Perhaps it's worth another go?

As I have only just learned higher up on this page, FF has an Android button in the URL bar to switch from, for example, a Youtube page to the Youtube native application. I was missing this too!

I'm afraid not. Federation isn't supported at all as far as I'm aware. It was on the Signal roadmap early on, but things have changed: https://whispersystems.org/blog/the-ecosystem-is-moving/

It's not without a few (non-dealbreaker, at least for me) bugs but Signal-desktop works well.

I disagree that most people know this. I imagine most reasonably technical people do, but I'd be amazed if most people on the street understand any of this.

I used to think the same sort of thing regarding the Scots language, but a while ago I came across this website that disagrees: http://www.ayecan.com/faq.html#answer1

I'm not sure how relevant this is, but I'm one of the most open, positive and optimistic people I know and I just want everyone to enjoy life and being alive as much as I do. Perhaps people like that.

I'm glad you wrote this. I feel similarly myself, although it sounds like the making of friends comes more naturally to you. I have a surplus of friends that I know could become much closer friends if I was able to dedicate more time t

I would really, really like to hear more about federation in Signal too. They used to mention that it was planned, but that was a while ago now.

I agree about the documentation and a number of other things, but why doesn't the Chromium extension count as a desktop client? You don't need to use Chromium for anything else if you don't want.

Have you heard much about the Signal server federation? It's been more than a year since it was mentioned (that I've seen) by the Open Whisper Systems folks. I'm hoping it's still on some sort of roadmap.

It seems that Rocket League is so good it has forced Microsoft to implement something wanted for years!

Thank you very much. This has given me a lot of food for thought. I hadn't ever considered TOR for NAT traversal for a start.

There was talk some time ago now about Signal server federation. I was under the impression that it was planned and either dropped or de-prioritised for now. Certainly, it seems that while running your own server might not be actively disco

These aren't specifically about Qt or GTK applications (except maybe the Ubuntu phone app), but here are some other projects that are shooting for compatibility: https://github.com/f41c0r/textsecure-client https:

They do plan to use other identifiers than the phone number but I don't know how high a priority it is. My knowledge about this is probably a year old.

I suppose it's because I've spent quite a lot of time in the GNU Readline source that this function doesn't seem that bad. Not that I'm wanting to endorse it as great code, of course. I find it fascinating to look at h
