Of course, those build files won't be stripped, meaning that it would be easier to reverse-engineer them - which might not be something the distributor wants.

Local models are a thing, though. You can run DeepSeek on your local computer. Even if ChatGPT, Huggingface, etc. died, we would still have the models and we would still be able to run them.

I think using the term "by" like that at all is going to lead to serious confusion. As we all know, GitHub is not "by" Microsoft (as in, written by them). It's under their control now, and sure, they've made a

I'm not talking about ads, I'm talking about telemetry. It just happens to be that ad blockers can also block other resources as well - but not Reddit's telemetry, for the reasons I explained.

One thing I've noticed is that Reddit is very, very aggressive about how it implements its telemetry. Not only is the endpoint that it uses for collecting events randomized each time you load a page, but it also happens that every even

These bots are everywhere on Reddit. There's a whole network of them, doing exactly the same sort of thing as this article found.

At first, I thought this was a general Ruby thing, but the install process has you running Rails commands. Does that mean this is web-focused, rather than a UI thing that I can use in native Ruby applications?

Given that the original exposé was meant to be a three-part series, I'm almost certain this is not all that Honey does. The remaining parts have never been released. In January, MegaLag tweeted to explain what's been going on:

Not necessarily. As a counterpoint, I have a site (< https://www.automidiflip.com/ >, which I posted to HN on launch 8 years ago[0], which provides a service and does not have (and has never had) any ads whatsoever. (It

According to the site, the funding comes from its "Search as a Service" feature[0], where anybody can pay them in order to have a search service focused on their site (which does not have to be in the public index and thus doesn&#

I genuinely can't tell whether you're being sarcastic or whether you're saying that you appreciated the link to the XKCD. If the former, then I apologise.

I wanted to expand a little on footnote #4, regarding how CD-ROM drives weren't really standardised. At the time, because of the lack of standardisation, there were a lot of different device drivers for different CD-ROM drives, and tho

Obviously, FOIA requests are meant to be completed using the organisation's own records, but is there anything that's stopping them from just replying with copy-pastes of the post text from the Wayback Machine?

My main use for WHOIS currently is actually not for domain names. I use it for querying IP addresses on whois.arin.net. Does anyone know how this news will impact that particular service, if at all?

This is a fair point. I know that "pool's closed" comes from Habbo Hotel, but only because I've actually heard that information before. I wouldn't know anything about it otherwise. In contrast, I've never heard

Oh dear, I didn't realise this. I knew that GitHub Release archives could have different files in them - for example, see the xz backdoor recently - but I didn't realise that npm would use those by default.
