I feel like machine learning is to the stock exchange like regular expressions are to html: everyone who learns about the first will at some point think them to be useful for dealing with the latter.

Find something that you know is profitable and do a better job at it. Ignore any intuition that says that you could never compete with an existing service and that it would be better to come up with an original idea; not only are original i

The first sentence describes most people who go to casinos, though. And the second sentence might be correct, I don't think it's something you can just assert without a source.

I hate this "fun is inefficient" mentality that permiates HN. You're perhaps not wrong that most entertainment isn't optimally generating utility (for some definitions of "utility"), but this position is really

For the vast majority of people, living in a world without fish and sushi costing $100 are functionally equivalent.

It's a shame since this tool would be particularly useful for recommending small subs. I don't need it to tell me about big subs, since I already know them.

It's a cool tool, but it seems very biased towards bigger subs. If you let it loose on a small sub it will emphasize that big, kinda-but-not-really related subs over tiny-but-closely-related subs.

The accuracy of this meme is stunning. I run an anime-related discord of 20-odd people and at least half of people there work in tech in some way. I've seen similar things in order such communities. I wonder if this is just a cultural

Emacs with evil-mode (or spacemacs, but that's just Emacs with evil and other stuff). Emacs allows you to very easily treat everything like text, and evil provides the best ways of navigating and editing that text. You get a very power

DS was a dumb name. 3DS was clever. 2DS was bad but I don't know what they should've called the "3DS that isn't 3D" otherwise (3D-isn't?). After that they should've just stopped, I cannot fathom why they d

"net positive effect" is subjective. Drinking is fun and eases social interactions; I personally value that more than whatever downsides there might be to memory formation.

Development performance does not increase linearly with time. I could not do any meaningful work with 3% of my time. Maybe if you have 33+ developers and dedicate one to fulltime open source development, this might be the case.

I very much doubt anyone would disagree with this argument; however, it says nothing about the magnitude of the effect. Also, just for the sake of argument, just because CO2 is a greenhouse gas does not mean releasing more of it will incr

Mozilla has a political stance that I do not support, and they openly use Firefox to push it. This doesn't get brought up enough on places that lean liberal such as HN, but it is a reason why I, and several other people I know, cannot
