Agreed. I'm over 50, so I'm 'allowed' to use FB ;-), for those few posts of the last remaining family and friends there. Using FBP, I only see new posts of friends in chronological order. But FB still f*cks you, be

Ah, Scheme was part of a programming language course, studying CS in ~ 1990. We students struggled to match all the parenthesis on our VT100 terminals. And to understand the intended purpose of the functions, which are not attached to modu

Next to a book on 6502 assembly, you can google "apple 2 original system manual" and download it. I contains ROM assembly source code and schematics.

Ah how silly of me, that woud make it 28 bytes. (I had the nagging feeling I was missing something :-) And promotions are also not covered by this...

Why not do it simpler? : Create an array with 16 elements, one element per piece, black + white. Every array element is 7 bits wide, 1 bit for captured or not, and 6 bits for the square number the piece is on (8 x 8). Then you need 16 * 7 =

Ditto on the working set. For the 'crazy' bookmark lists: I now have 220 bookmarks, max 4 levels deep, counting the bookmark bar as level 1. And that's work and private combined. Before I add a tab to the bookmarks, I ask mys

I'm also baffled by the number of (also smart) colleagues with completely cluttered, unreadable tab bars using computers with severly degradated performance. . When a simple, clean bookmark hierarchy (under the tab bar) plus a working

Thanks indeed. Using a simple left-to-right evaluation is the most logical solution. You can reorder expressions to use less parentheses and make them easier to read. E.g.: Smalltalk :-). But this requires everyone un-learning their primary

So Cloudflare: - Did a last minute, untested change to their change: "turning off our WAF rule testing tool". - Did an immediate global roll-out, instead of a staged one. . Is seems they would have enough leaning-cases now never

You comment is more about LISP, but just to say that in SmallJS, you could write small command line utilities easily, that are started with the Node.js runtime quickly. And yes, the edit - recompile - run loop in SmallJS takes a second or t

Sure, you could do that too in SmallJS. See the classes in ./Smalltalk/Core/Fetch and in ./Smalltalk/Node/Server. The Fetch unit tests actually have a case for this, I think.

I see. Then you would first have to have (make) a server that serves up *.st source files throug a REST api. Then you would modify the ./Playground project to fetch the files from your server in stead of from the TextArea. This is done

I would say the main point of Smalltalk that everything is an object, including basic types and also classes (reflection). That make everything so much simpler and more consistent. Having a 'live' IDE is nicely interactive, but it

The ./Playground project in the repo does that (taking ST source from a HTML text area). But you could modify it to open a file. (Note that browsers cannot read arbitrary files without user interaction.) The Playground has a slightly m

I did look at Amber before starting SmallJS. But having a full, separate IDE seemed nicer than a limited one in the browser. Amber itself has been stagnant for a few years now, alas.

The Playground example in SmallJS actually does this a bit. You can compile arbitrary ST expressions within a running web page. Underneath HTML <script> nodes are created. But I didnt think it was worth it to create a fully live IDE.

So SmallJS works the same way. Update text files, press Run and the 'image' is updated in a second or 2. But it contains only code, not data. And I think that's a good thing..

Hi all, I'm the creator of SmallJS, and was wondering why its GitGub star count had suddenly shot up :-). Feel free to ask me any any questions here. I'll try to respond to some. Here's a short presentation that has fallen of
