Impressive how close the performance got to Nginx for large files after the buffer memory pointer problem was fixed. The API changes are going to be interesting.

That's a very odd and circuitous way of doing something that is already built-in, I've got to say.

Not to be a downer or anything, but do you think this would encourage voting cabals? If I noticed every post my friends added, I'd probably end up upvoting them quite a bit more, and perhaps quite artificially.

Hitting T and then typing into the address bar isn't fast enough? How could that even be sped up?

They could take a hint from Hacker News. Creating a successful community is all about pre-seeding it. Of course, the problem is this can't be scaled. Making enough friends to found a domain specific website with a good group of them isn't e

There are also options like Erlang and Node.js where hot code-swapping is possible. Although having a second database is useful as a slave, of course, I don't think it is necessary to run two copies of the database just to redeploy. Github

Yes and no. I've tried this sort of thing before, and obviously the machine can't know when you are actually reading a paragraph slowly or when you've just been distracted. It would have to be clever about weighting an overall average with

Glad I'm not the only one who thought many of the popular iPad applications were silly. The Average Reading Time idea is intriguing, however, I don't expect it to be of much use. Reading time varies vastly depending on the material. Nobody

Displaying them all in a column like that emphasizes the value variations. Which is the point, of course. It's just that there is a segment of the population that always acts shocked to discover that the three colors they picked look differ

Nice tool, although the way the colors are displayed can distort perception. Always remember to test and pick colors in context. If you are using a white background, don't pick colors in a black app, and vice versa.

I don't think it has to do with PG anymore specifically. But rather, if you were to mention HN in a cover letter as the way you heard about a job opportunity, then your Hacker News profile would likely be checked out. I've had it happen 2 o

You could look at it another way and derive an opposite conclusion. A lot of people have a feeling that what they do on Hacker News "matters" in that other people are watching their behavior, and might choose to hire them or co-found with t

Definitely. Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations was an exploration of how society could be structured to incentivize moral behavior. Schools should be structured to incentivize education.

Honestly, nothing I've seen about the operating system leads me to think it is actually very custom (insofar as you would call the EeePC's Linux "custom"). It probably just ships with a kernel compiled with the touchscreen drivers, and othe

I can't believe Smashing Magazine is writing this article. They soundly missed April Fool's Day. If there is a single thing I've seen Smashing Magazine promote, it is imitation and mindless copying. Their analysis of design is consistentl

Well, as a non-profit start-up it seems like simply asking for money would be easier than for an average start-up. Presumably people are willing to donate, if it's a good cause, and you can base your appeal on the good you'll do, rather tha
