I’m not terribly privy to it because the DBAs manage it, but it’s some kind of Oracle replication like GoldenGate? But replication is everywhere now. MySQL, rsync, whatever. Plenty of choices.

I am also running a side business with a tight budget. Governance is free, and nowadays multiple sites are cheap. Create an identical setup, use replication, strong change controls, and test failover. Monitor replication failures. If you do

Three words: Disaster recovery site. That’s saved our butts so many times. We fail over then work on resolution and RCA. I am a systems admin at a large multi national company. Downtime can run in the billions per hour. I’ve only ever seen

Sounds like it might be a good product for you or someone to come out with :-) A 10MP N-scale camera car. What about a 2MP ESP8266-based Arducam? Lay it flat, use a tiny mirror to get the image ahead. Power it by the rails. Only slightly la

An embarrassing admission, but one that is potentially useful for this conversation: I have a Cisco CCNA cert that I got in 2009 but never used. (Got a job that didn’t put most of the knowledge to use, and the cert collected dust.) IPv6 was

Could you lay a better camera on a flatbed car and push that car from behind with an engine? So it would be an engineer's eye view. And get power from the rails or from batteries on another flatcar.

I don’t use it terribly often, but recently when I started using KiCad I found that it’s very handy for block operations. I can bring up the right click menu without lifting my left mouse button or even moving the mouse in any way. There th

Permaculture seems to be the answer. It’s not that there aren’t sufficient resources for a comfortable life, it’s that the way those resources are used is incredibly poor. Some Permaculturists estimate the globe actually has a carrying capa

I found the rising oceans story with regard to this island hard to believe when I read somewhere that a neighboring island’s shores are doing just fine. Rising oceans ought to affect neighbors as well. And further, here we read that the mas

I worry about phoning home if the company goes offline. When phoning home, sniff the packets. I wonder if mother China is sending exactly the same authorization packets back to the device every time? If so it should not be terribly difficul

I may get flak for this but... The Bible. Immensely useful in a variety of areas in daily life. Even secular readers praise its poetry and purpose. I prefer the English Standard Version. Readable yet accurate.

Since charge time occurs during the middle of the day when both ambient temperatures are higher, and sunlight is warming the enclosure, and since charging slightly warms cells, and since electronics also warm cells, you have a better chance

Sorry I didn't mean transmit ONLY, just primarily. Of course you can still receive updates with such a device.

Also consider not doing mesh if you need a longer life. I would expect that LoRa modules could cover the same distance a mesh could, and would only transmit then power down. Some receiving would be done as well but not as much as a mesh. By

Useful article! There's one thing you didn't consider: Charging temperature. Lithium charging temps are typically 0 degrees Centigrade. Any lower could damage the cells. NiCd is a bit better and there are some low temp NiMh but fo
