Sponsored locations were already a part of the old Android and iOS apps, so its more accurate to say that they're bringing the ads back to the new design.

What's even stranger is that "OK Google" is the hotword for the Chrome Voice search thing they recently launched at IO. Retconning "Google Now" into a voice assistant is weird because at IO they were saying how th

Technically all they did in the tabbed layout was swap the old ads which hovered over the Inbox message list with embedded ads in the Promotion tab. So the choice is between "Ads in Inbox list + Ads in message view" VS "Ads i

Maybe, but Google have plenty of tactical products which only have an indirect at best business model. Reader shutdown seems more a case of management vision. Under Page's reorg there are now 5 consumer facing units: 1. Knowledge (Sear

Scraping/doing it semantically has copyright implications (Re: Europe) so realistically the Google-owned approach is the most viable one.

You could already do this in iOS by going into Settings -> Mail,Contacts, Calendars -> Add Account -> Other -> Add CardDAV and entering your Google account user/pass. This makes no difference whatsoever.

Google Keep is an iOS/OS X Notes competitor, not an Evernote competitor. Their Evernote competitor was Google Notebook which preceded Evernote and was already shut down.

"Picasa" the desktop app maybe, but I think the reason Picasa web albums/API lives on is that it provides the backend for Google+ Photos and they don't want to break existing apps using that API just to rename it, so continue to build stuff
