American Express is a full-stack institution with its own processing network, own bank, own card issuance, own customer service, etc. It also serves a ton more people than Bitcoin does. If the comparison is unfair, it's in Bitcoin'

That's fair, but if you were to say, American Express and count its entire energy usage across all sections of the company and its entire business, it'd still surely use orders of magnitude less than BTC while processing orders of

"Balances" are stored on every block. If you threw away the beginning of the chain, you could keep generating blocks, but you couldn't spend any transaction outputs that are stored in the thrown away parts of the chain. Unles

I don't agree that we ended up in a culture that is more conscious of diversity. I think we moved to a a culture of adversity between social justice warriors and those who outright rebel against their ridiculous campaign. If it wasn&#x

Did you read the article? It's not about a high-paid engineer working at a big 5 tech company and living in an RV. It's about people who can't afford homes and work temporary jobs around the country because our economy has fa

I'd like to know how someone drives 3.5mi daily for $2.50 with Uber, even with pool, in SF. My pool rides start out at around $4 one-way, for .5mi and under. UberX is $7+ at minimum, and quickly tops $10 for 1mi+ trips.

For immigration purposes, Hong Kong is not in China, and doesn't have the same registration requirements as the mainland.

Aside from the inconvenience of clearing immigration on transit (and I can't say I've ever transited _through_ the US, despite clearing US immigration ~50), the airport experience is much nicer. International and domestic flights

I'm not sure why that quote that people keep bringing up is so outrageous to people. In my opinion, it's a pretty factual analysis of the political climate; in which the voter demographics have shifted in a way which makes it toug

This thread itself is a great example of how this conversation was _not_ pointless. Intellectually interesting points made on both sides about the point of debating.

There are various ways of getting around this tax even if the plan passes: - Provide compensation through LLC membership units which vest but have no value at the time of grant. - Allow early exercise of options when the spread is zero.

Incredibly excited about this project. Since Title III of the JOBS Act went live last year, we've created one of the first equity crowdfunding platforms. We focus a lot on inclusivity and social impact. Obviously, there's been a w

There is little incentives for employers to do that, unless it becomes a market standard and employees demand it.

If you think a $220M acquisition is a home run for anyone involved, you don't understand the Venture model. Liquidation preferences means that investors are probably getting around 1x their money back, which will be considered a failur

We already have a ninth planet, Pluto. Why did they start calling it a rock again? Isn't the definition of a planet a mostly spherical rock that orbits around a star, no?

The sad part is that one is illegal and one isn't. It's a bigger problem for Cloudflare to act as the moral police by kicking off Nazis without them doing anything illegal. Copyright infringement is a more clear cut case. If there

It's a design problem. Sex with condom sucks. Non-condom sex is 10x better. The real solution will be when you have male birth control available as well; and then it comes down to only having sex with people you trust. I great partner

Larry Page not being the CEO of Google is somewhat pedantic… he's the CEO of Alphabet, formerly known as Google. Sundar Pichai is the CEO of formerly Google's Google division, now known as the only Google, reporting to Larry Page.

It's not perfect either, I agree. It's hard and subjective to define what the real true value of something. But one common way is to define it as "what someone will pay for it" -- that's the math I did above. Anyway

If you're going to put a specific value on something, it's be much more accurate to calculate it as the sum of the entire demand for that something divided by its quantity. To take the 100 shares at $500 example from @stanmancan,

That's not exactly right. You have to consider the depth of the market and the size of the demand. However many BCH are in existence, there's no way that the market will support liquidating them all for USD. An order of that size
