The vaccine rollout is such a mess in the US. This is one of those times where a federal controlled distribution or at least a state level distribution makes sense. People rushing around between different providers or having to use third pa

I've been meaning to contribute some changes to OSM. It provides by far the best mapping in my area out of any provider but there are some bits that are inaccurate or incomplete. This has given me the push to actually look into how to

Yeah, I deal with so many different countries that it is a minefield using any other date format than RFC3339/ISO8601. I have been stung by having my birthday month and day inverted a few times when using DD/MM/YYYY format.

The google news link is obviously just a slight on Australians ;)

No influencers is a positive. They make social media such a toxic environment. I am enjoying the relatively nerdy community of mastodon ATM. It feels like a place to see some actual thought provoking discussion

The thing I think people usually forget is that because it doesn't track you it doesn't have a lot of the context that google infers. For example when you are searching for restaraunts you will probably need to add your city or to

Yeah Google is unusable over a VPN. The amount of captchas is crazy. Even on corporate connections with cookies blocked it can get antsy because it can't track you well enough.

Well this seems to be fully p2p as in decentralised to the user rather than just to the server. That comes with its own problems though... Problems that don't seem to have many advantages over having federated servers. I would also lik

Interesting use of tech but I think Mastodon/Activitypub is decentralised enough for most people. If this could federate with the existing platforms then I think its great - if it is yet another platform I don't think I'll be

It loads when you are in a large number of rooms and it has to pull and decrypt large amounts of backlog. But its really not that long.

As mentioned this is configurable on Firefox but besides that it also makes it so much nicer for one handed usage. Reaching right up the top of the screen is really awkward one handed.

I have fond memories of MySpace but I feel it was the experience of being on a happier and friendlier Web at the time. I don't think cloning it technologically is going to do anything to bring that culture back.

It works great for me on Linux. There are obviously some confounding factors here that happen to disproportionately impact Firefox on your system.

Completely agree. I'm not up on the specific examples you mention but I think we need to take a big hard look at putting our society at the control of a handful of tech companies. I think this is a good opportunity to mention new feder

This is true but really shows the morality (or lack of) for companies. Profit over all is basically what it comes down to.

Pretty common in ruggedized devices. Has the benefit of keeping components stuck down under vibration and tamper evident too.

You have almost certainly had a keyboard with these, even if it was behind a fn key combo on a laptop.

Job advertisements are a type of advertisement and are what is being talked about here. General advertisement has nothing to do with the OP article, isn't legislated the same, and nobody is surprised about demographic limiting general

As opposed to this ad that uses PC and Mac??? I don't get your argument when it is basically the same argument inverted. This advert doesn't include prominent Intel branding either - they are fighting for the PC segment.

Yup. Triggering this legislation on who the company is rather than what they are doing is ridiculous and loses any credibility it has.

Yeah that is my biggest problem with this legislation... the law should allow or criminalise specific behaviours or characteristics, not name specific organisations. I'm no Google or Facebook fan but targeting them in legislation for w

Agree after that period where you stopped needing to manually install drivers and configure things I'm sure tech literacy dropped off - there is no reason to know how your technology works these days (to survive) unless you like tinker

This article could do with a little more editorial review. Apologies, I'm sure the author tried their hardest; but, it needs a good proof read. It has many examples of weird grammar and additional or misplaced words that means sometime
