This isn't just stacking palettes of crackers. Parmesan requires climate-controlled warehouses, and must be often tested, repositioned, and (yes) guarded. It's also a more risky investment.

The big difference in cost is in the number of months of aging. Cheap Parmigiano-Reggiano might be 20-24 months old. It gets much better tasting, and more expensive, at 36 months, and better still (and more costly) at 40 months. We'

FileMerge was released in NeXTSTEP 3.2, which came out in 1993. See for example: https://www.blackholeinc.com/Library/94%20Jan.html Indeed, I have it on my Turbo NeXTStation (3.2). Was it revised slightly for NeXTSTE

Fun Fact. FileMerge.app has remained essentially unchanged since it was introduced in NeXTSTEP (I think 3.2 or earlier) in the early 1990s.

The speed tests appear to include the startup time of the virtual machine. We all know Java is slow to start up and Go is fast in this respect. That's not useful information. Rather than bias the results this way, much more interesti

I got my kids some Math Art Fun dice. These included a rhombic d12, d24, d48, d60, and the mighty d120, plus some assorted skewed dice. Shoulda gotten a d30 too. These are absolutely fabulous dice, even if they have limited use. And the

Eats Shoots and Leaves is riddled with punctuation errors. What it is is a canonical example of why the British, who long ago abandoned consistent punctuation, should not write books lecturing others about punctuation. I think the best

Sure, yes, coalitions form in even unlikely places. But even so, come on. Plumbing is largely a zero sum game, or at least far more so than book sales.

What does $m^{1 + O(1)}$ time mean exactly? This could be m^5000 for all we knew. How is this almost-linear, and how can it be guaranteed?

To me, a critical quality of a handheld and portable gaming device is durability. In this light, a handcrank, with a fairly long shaft and a 90 degree handle, seems to be an incredibly stupid idea. It's just begging to get snagged on

The museum's cookbook collection predictably stops just short of Marcella Hazan. Italy's most influential modern cookbook author is almost unknown in her own country. Even in her hometown of Cesenatico the local hero is Pantani.
